Phonic T8100 VocalMax

www.americanmusical.com/item--i-PHO%20T8100.html
(sorry dB, unavailable at Musicians Friends)

Ordered it yesterday at 4pm, got here today at noon with free shipping! Just in time 'cause we're (Sonic Lux) planning on beginning work on our first full-length album. I just can't wait to try it out, should make a world of difference compared to the build in pres on our digi-002.

I just have a concern about the way I want to route the thing.

For each channel, it has 2 outs, an XLR and a balanced TRS. Do you think it would hurt anything to use both outputs at the same time? The reason I want to do this is that I want to run the TRS to the digi-002 and I want the XLR to run to our Mackie mixer for monitoring purposes.

as long as it's a preamp, and not an amp, I don'tthink using them both would hurt, but honestly, I dunno...I don't see why it would, but some electronics guru might come and prove me wrong...

Try it, if it breaks, at least it's under warranty :-)

I wouldn't think it would hurt either, but I'm kinda worried about sacrificing signal integrity because it would be basically splitting the signal.

Also, I just thought of this, but you know with, say, a home stereo and when you wire more then one speaker out of a speaker jack, the impedance is cut in half with each additional speaker. I wonder if the same would apply here.

Well, thats why I said I could understand if it was an amplifier, but this isn't...

Not to sound annoying and negative, but I wouldn't expect a world of difference at all. I've tried out $300 and $400 pres against the two pres built into my Layla 3G, and the Layla 3G pres were either equal to or beat them out in most all of my tests. I also tried them all against Behringer board pres, and even the difference in that case was only small. Check out my "Personal Preamp Shootout" thread if you're curious :) If I'm wrong in this case, I'm wrong, but I don't think I will be... Just make sure you can return it if you find that it makes no difference.

Audiophiles wouldn't... because splitting line level (1.2v) would cause you to have to add more gain then usual to get back up to a useable voltage and might introduce more noise.

Explain why you would need to send the signal to the mackie for monitoring... don't you monitor after ProTools?

Of course when all is said and done, If it sounds good, then it is good. Try it and see if you can tell a difference.

Well, the thing with monitoring out of protools is that, even with the 'low latency' option selected, there's still an unacceptable degree of latency going on. That might not be the case for HD systems, but with the LE version we have is horrible for that. I mean, when I play back the track after it's recorded it's fine, just a little too much to deal with when tracking.

I guess it could also be a setting that needs to be adjusted. I dunno, haven't really messed with any of the preferences much yet. I'll have to check through that book dB sent me a while back to see.

Still haven't checked out the sound of it yet. Hopefully it will be a worthwhile investment but you could be right, Porpoise, maybe it won't make much difference.

Tomorrow, I hope to lay down some drum tracks with it and see how it does there but I'm actually hoping to lay down the majority of the tracks with it. I can't wait, it's been a while since I've been able to do this stuff, at least in a serious project like this.

Yea, i found i had that problem with my aardvarks. There was only a very small delay, but it was noticible enough when laying down vocals. I monitor of my mixers aux's like you want to, but, i run all of my signals through my mixer. The direct outs of my mixer are directly connected to my aardvark Q 10's. Its not the cleanest of signal chains but he, it still gives a respectable amount of signal to noise.

I WISH our mixer had direct outs, I'm stuck with doing the 1st click method on the inserts if I want to use the mixer's pres.

The other thing with that is I would pretty much be losing out on any benefit the Phonic may provide by running it through the mackie and then to the 002.

I should probably head off to bed, big day tomorrow!

Maybe do like WhosYourDaddy did recently and plug the outboard preamp into a line in on your mixer. Then you bypass the mixer's preamps and you still get the routing flexibility of your mixer.
