I went into a music store in Youngstown, Ohio in 1972 and bought a new telecaster deluxe for around $200-$300 as my second guitar. I've played the tele ever since. I wanted to know more about it lately so I did a little research.
Holy Crap! Check out the price!

You can pick up a reissue for around $600 but originals are apparently a bit more expensive.
I think I'll treat my tele with a little more respect from now on.

pjk;
I've never met anyone else who owns/owned a tele deluxe. Over the years I've only seen 2 photos of well know players using it. One was Keith Richards, the other I cant remember, so I just figured this model was a Fender goof or something and I didn't realize that they made them up to the early 80s. I've always liked it because of the ballsy but clear sound.

A couple of questions...
I never had the frets ground down and they seem a little tall to me, even compared to strats with the same neck. Was yours the same way?
How did you use yours? With bands I played a lot of rhythem using it and when I added a Dimarzio pickup in the top position it was great for slide.

Oh... sorry, mines not for sale.

vintage and rare guitars fetch a pretty penny.

a co-worker of mine brought in this mid 90's peavey guitar(i think it was peavy) he was selling for a friend for 500 bux, really nice, well built, semi-hollow, he showed it to me and also another co-worker who is a guitar collector, well the guitar collector did some research and he estimated it was worth 20 grand, there were very few made. i thought bullshit!

long story short the guy that brought in the guitar puts it on ebay(a couple times with different reserves) and no he doesnt get 20 grand but he gets 5 grand for it.. 5 grand!!!!

the sad part is i know for a fact this guy bought the guitar from his friend for 500 bux and made 4500, how lame is that.

I had mine given to me by someone who found it in an empty apartment. He was painting the apartment, and found the guitar in pieces inside the original case. He didn't know much about it, so he gave it to me.

The neck had been redone, as had the body. I had my guitar tech down south of detroit redo the neck, heat-straightened, re-fret, re-finish. Turned out awesome. I was in the middle of refinishing the body when the fire came along, and poof, one less 73 deluxe in the world.

I played mostly rythym, some leads. I found the pickups to be very lively and snappy, more edgey than most other humbuckers, while meatier than a single coil. I usually played through both pups, into my 67 super reverb. Very nice combination.
