When I say basic, I mean really basic. Small room, my voice, an acoustic guitar, occasionally a mandolin, ocassionally a keyboard, virtually never using more than one of those at a time (I will probably double-mic the guitar, but otherwise I'm using a single microphone).
I am just getting started, so I know nothing about equipment. I have the computer (laptop), and I have the software (cool edit pro). I think I have gleaned enough from other posts to figure out what I want in terms of mics, but I need a sound card that suits my needs, and don't want to spend the extra several hundred to get something that can capture 47 tracks from my entire orchestra and drum circle.
Advice?

stereo ins, stereo outs, MIDI, high performance drivers and great sound. Simple one or two track recording, simple I/O assignment...it's what I use and I am like you, one track at a time...

Jun 30, 2005 03:37 pm Welcome to HRC,
External would probably be your route. I've a laptop with a tascam us122. I don't think it's the best out there, but works quite well for my needs at the moment. It's got 24bit, which other ext devices don't.
I believe Echo makes a pcmcia card that's got 1/8" jacks, don't know much more about it.
M-audio makes a external USB connected unit that looks quite good, wish I looked at that when I was shopping for my tascam.
I beleive there's an Edirol UA25 or something like that. I believe that's pretty close to the tascam, but 16bit, not 24 (i think). Otherwise very close.
USB or Firewire are the two connection types for the external devices. I'd recommend the external because you can connect different components alot easier with the bigger devices. Adapting down to 1/8" on everything would worry me.
There's also bigger, and more flashy firewire options, but you mentioned that they wouldn't apply.
Have fun, and good luck.
Jun 30, 2005 03:41 pm ah, laptop, well, in that case the Juli@ is out, wish I'd have seen the "laptop" part earlier...

Go Echo!!! lol
Seriously you could look at Echo Audio's line.
I dunno anything about their laptop cards but my PC one is pretty cool.
Jun 30, 2005 04:21 pm I will never buy an Echo card again in my lifetime...

Jun 30, 2005 04:31 pm I just read a review of this in the latest Musician's Friend catalog:
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear
PCMCIA, 2 mic preamps, comes with Cubase LE. The only thing I don't get is the 16 in/16 out thing...I just don't see where the ins and outs are on the device itself. Also I don't know how much more expensive these 16 mysterious I/Os make the unit. $400 is kinda steep, but its cool that it's PCMCIA and has preamps and mixing software.

I did some digging as I was curious about this unit myself.
Here is a link that shows the back where the I/O's are.

Jun 30, 2005 05:28 pm OK I see. 4 on the front, 12 on the back. This may actually be overkill for what he needs. Nice looking card, with great looking preamps and A/D converters though.

Jun 30, 2005 06:10 pm Well keep in mind when I bought 95% of my sh** I wasn't "HRC Guided"...
The only thing I have bought on the guidance of HRC has been HarBal...I haven't bought much since.
Thats why I have asked so many inane equipment questions here...I don't know the stuff with the most bang for the buck.
