Hey guys! I'm having a HUGE problem getting a nice Huge kick drum attack sound, right now its descent, but i know it can get ALOT better, and I use a Audix d6 mic. Anybody have a suggestion what I can do to make a bigger attack sound??(less muffled)

Put the D6 further towards where the beater strikes the kick drum. Also boost at 2.5-5K for a clicky soughta sound.

Hope that helps

i like to copy my kick track and treat them seperately, one for "beef" and the other for "snap", generaly i compress the beef track and leave the snap alone...then just blend them together as needed.

you could try tuning the drum.

moving the mic closer or further(closer seems like it would be punchier but every now and again i get a slamming sound front 2 inches inside the hole)

change the drumhead - aquarian superkicks are awesome.

dampen the front head more.

try a second mic outside the drum where the kicks meet the drum. play with phase.

EQ - add some high end.....a little @10-12 k and take off some down around 200-400 play with the mids a little too.

different patches like the danmar metal kick plate. try duct taping 2 quarter where the kicks meet the head.

compress the hell out of it. or in addition to what whos your daddy said compress the "clicky" track and leave one alone and mix em together.

different preamp?

how does the room effect the sound? maybe take off the front head and put a thick blanket over the whole kick drum, except for the kick side. this will reduce muffling or rumbling from the front head.

basically try whatever you think might work. whether it works or not observe the results and keep them in mind for future reference.
