recording a live gig

hello everyone! yet another question.... and i think this is the right forum to put it in.

so i am looking for a decent multi purpose mixing desk - primarily for home studio use but also the occasional gig. i decided against paying out for a powered mixer (i figured if it was only an occasional gig, it would make more sense to rent a power amp or whatever...)

anyway, i'm as good as certain that i'm gonna buy the soundcraft e12. this gives me enough ins and outs to use with my delta 66, plus i figured 12 mono inputs is enough for the average community centre gig!

anyway, i was hoping that as a byproduct of doing some gigs with this desk, i would be able to make some recordings of the gigs...

so my question is.. what outs on the desk should i use to make a recording? i figured that i would use the MIX LR to send to the PA, and then plug the REC OUT into some sort of recording device (maybe my PC?) to record the signal.

would the signal being sent to the MIX LR be the same as being sent to the REC OUT? can anyone see a flaw in this method.....?

thanks for any help :)

i went ahead and ordered it anyway :P so good job it'll work!

now i've just got to decide what i will record to... i have a small portable minidisc player wth recording facilities which i might use - but then i worry about the file compression it will use. maybe ill just lug my pc to gigs.

I record things to MD a fair bit, gigs and rehearsals for reference, found sounds, that sort of stuff. The new HI thingy MDs don't use compression apparently, so that might be worth looking into.

One thing you'll notice about recording live that way, is that what sounds 'good' through the PA, can sound, uhm... 'different' on a media . With this set-up be sure not to let the recorded mix dictate your levels for the shows sound . The minidisk will work great for it !

one thing I've noticed as well (to add to what Hue said), is that drums seem to be the most different in a live setting. I've not done a lot of live recordings, but the few I've done have lead me to believe that if you have the 4 ins, then I'd try to keep drums on a seperate track (or two) so I could mix them a little different later if I can.

course, if you're recording to MD, then never mind =)

just my .02$us, of course.

I'd get a fostex vf160. I use these for live gig recording as well as field/home recording, and they double up as a preamp for 8 inputs into my digi001's adat input.
