A couple more old Beatle Covers

Here's a couple more old covers I dusted off. I added new drums to In My Life. The usual poor sound quality applies from the old tapes but I think they cleaned up decently. :)

"In My Life" is all I've checked so far and all I can say is this is excellent man,

As ye know, I am a big Beatles/Lennon fan and this is superb. Lovin that guitaring and the vocals - sweet man.

Good mix and for something you cleaned up, I cant tell - it sounds like it has always been digital man...very good clean up job Dan...VERY good.

Aye, I'll go check the other one now but I must say, this is a good cover of one of Lennons finest tunes...cool.

Thanks CS! These were recorded on a Fostex 4 track cassette. The guitars on In My Life were done with a Boss CE chorus pedal thru a Peavey Classic 50 amp mic'd with a SM57 and the bass was DI'd straight to the recorder which has a built in mixer.

Thanks again glad you enjoyed them. :)

Yep Coco if I had to pick a Beatle as my favorite it would probably be Lennon, with George a close 2nd. :) In My Life is one of my all time favorites.

Thanks for the good words on the mixes, the tapes mostly needed the highs brought back along with getting rid of tape hiss and getting the vocals back. The vocals seem to suffer the most on the old tapes, EQ and compression helped alot bringing them up in the mix.

Thanks for checking them out! :)

I had an old Tascam 4 track (2 ins at once) - man, thats when I got into PC recording.

Limitless tracks, undo, cut n paste..Id never go back.

That said, there is something to be said for analouge sound...but, the benefits of the PC mean I will never be gettin a 4 track.

However, Olddog has done a GREAT job with this restoration. Knowing him tho, I suspect he invested a fair bit of time in the cleanup!! Worth it tho...for sure.

Listened to the other track btw Dan, darn good too. Aye, its a sweet couple of covers.

Leads me to think we should resurrect the idea of a cover of Revolution???? 2 heavy elecs with the intro n solos done les paul/SG - maybe haul in Geetar Jim for his expertise and anyone else...would be cool man!

Restoration time was just here and there when I'd get bored of whatever I was working on, but some have a fair amount time involved, others were pretty quick.

I'd never go back either, not even to my 8 track reel to reel. On the 4 track I could do a max of about 6 parts with bouncing, along with having to sing & play at the same time, and it was a bear to get levels right when bouncing tracks down so it would sound good in the end with the other stuff added. I will say with analogue you didn't need as much in the way of effects to get a nice sound, but PC recording if far better especially for home studios where cost is a factor. :)

CS your best bet if you want to get something like that is on eBay. People are always selling them. Mine is a Fostex 250, they go for pretty cheap especially considering what they cost new when you could buy them. :)

Yeah, one of these days soon we need to get that Revolution cover going!

Aye, I agree. EBAY for older gear - its the way forward. In fact, I got ma Fostex VF160 on there for HALF the RRP and thats sweeeeet. Its perfect, as new and runs like clockwork..ye canny whack a bargain!

RE: Revo - Tis a done deal then. When I nail the stuff I have on the go, we'll get it on the go and rock it right up...see if we canny get a series of sweet harmonies, geetars and some other stuff.

It will be cool. We can get a multitude of folks onboard and it'll be diverse.

Cheers

Wow Olddog, reel to reel recording, i would love to do that!

Do you know how to splice?

What does it sound like compared to todays digital recordings?

Yes I know how to splice but the only time I did it was if the tape broke. :)

As far as tape compared to digital, recording on the 8 track gave a much warmer sound without sounding muddy and a more powerful sound and it seemed easier to get a good mix with out everything fighting for it's own EQ space IMO vs straight digital ie: before all the warmers, compression, maximizers etc. That said the 4 track didn't sound nearly as good as the 8 track, and my 1/4" format deck wouldn't have sounded as good as a 1/2" format machine.

Personally I don't think digital sounds quite as good as analog, but it's not enough enough difference to offset the hassles and cost of analog recording.

Keep in mind what your listening to here though has had some digital processing so it's not the true sound of the tape your hearing and actually just transfering it the computer made it a digital recording just as if I'd originally recorded it on a PC, I just didn't have to mix it or add effects. ;)
