Could someone please tell me what a preamp is, and what they are used for? I have just never been able to figure it out, thanks a buch

hey, welcome to HRC. A preamp is a doohickey that takes a weak signal (quiet) like that coming from a microphone and raises it (makes it louder) so that whatever your recording on can pick it up. Basically it makes stuff loud enough to record.
