I only recently scraped together the cash to get a soundcard and ive been spending alot of time reading about them on the site, but im still very much confused about alot of htings, like "firewire" or wat that means and all taht. plus i only have money for a soundcard, and i really cant buy a mixer, do i need one? Are there any soundcards that you can recommend that arent too expensive and will help out wiht not having to get pre amps, mixers, all that stuff. Im usingCubase and Logic, and i mainly do live recordings since im in a rock band. Our practice space has a bunch of standard mics and amps, but nothing recording based, we really only have money to get a soundcard so is there any taht can be recommended that is truly a "studio in a box"

Firewire is just a way of connecting a 'Firewire' device to your PC. Unless your using a laptop i wouldnt worry to much about that for a sound card.

How many instruments will you need to be recording at once?

If your going to be recording your stuff live then you'll need a card that has that amount of inputs (unless you do get a mixer).

Mixers are pretty cheap these days and most have some sort of pre-amps on them (as do sound cards).

goto www.m-audio.com and have a look around at some of their cards!

Thanx for the reply, ill probably be using around 2-3 channels on every instrument, coz i like to experiment. And then there is drums where id like about 8 or 10.

It would actually be cheaper (in many cases) to buy a sound card with a mixer than it would be to buy an 8 or more input sound device with preamps on each channel.

There are lots of sound cards with 8 inputs, but most have no preamps, or some have preamps on just a couple channels...one option would be one of the ProTools Digi002 units, but they are well over $1000 as I recall.

You are going to pay a lot wanting 8 inputs and 8 preamps, whether they are in one unit or more than one unit scattered across a sound card and mixer...

Ive been looking too for months. Here is what I narrowed down to.

M-Audio 1010Lite PCI $239:
like the 1010 ($450) but no rack box, just PCI interface w/8" cable octopus out back; 8 audio in/outs. A RCA-TRS octopus cable would be bout $40 more.

Echo Layla 3G $419:
8 in 8 out audio, 2 mic preamps, 2 headphone outputs, ADAT, digital in/outs; rack mount w/pci card. Ive read it has problems with certain motherboard chipsets.

ESP ESI1010:
LIke Layla but no ADAT, 1 headphone but only $317. Its supposed to be reviewed here soon and was waiting to read that before choosing the ESI1010. In the mean time I did find another recent review below:

202.186.86.35/audio/story.asp?file=/2005...p;sec=audiofile

I also tried the M-Audio 2496 (2 inputs) but I could never get it to work in my PC so Im avoiding M-Audio.
