Bass Drum

I know this is probably the wrong forum...but I thought I'd ask here. Im going to be buying a Yamaha Oak Custum kit. Im set on that. What I need help with are sizes. So far Im set with tom sizes, but the bass drum has been bugging me. Im split between going for a big 26", or sticking with the normal 22". If anyone has some suggestions or has a large than normal kick please share some words.

Also...I would need this for gigs and for recording if that makes a difference.

Josh, it depends on waht type of music your going to be playing. The 26" is a big rock kick, the 22" is a more standard for all around use. Good for clubs as well as in the studio. But if your in a metal band, the 26" might be that answer there.

O ya i forgot to mention that. Im in an emo/powerpop band, but I like a real big kick sound. Maybe a compromise of 24"???

id go for the smaller one for ease of recording, but again it depends on the type of music i guess. i got a 24" and it sounds lovely (after 4 hours of mic placement and deadening it down strategically)

ive found that the depth of the drum also makes a big difference in sound. i used to use a pearl export series set that had a 22" bass but was rather shallow, which in my opinion took a lot of the bottom end away. i switched to a pdp set because of the cost and i loved the deeper bass drum sound. i play in an emo/experimental band and it works great. (theres a good mix of it at purevolume.com/anomie if thats the kinda music youre into) i dunno, depth might be somethin you want to consider. good hunting

bigger drums sound smaller (boxy) on tape....err disk...

if you're playin' live alot, the big one will sound HUGE on stage...but for recording, smaller drums sound bigger and fuller.

so i say it depends on what you're gonna do most.

Yes, a good comprimise would be the 24" then. controlable tone and still a pretty big sound.

Learned something the other week at our band's 25th reunion dealie. Friday night "rehearsal" slash jam was at my brother's house, and the other guitar player in our old band plays drums now in my brother's band. Our old drummer was going to use the old guitar player's kit (already set-up). The guitar player/now-drummer is a "connoisseur" of kick drums, if you will. He's got a 22" kick, can't remember the depth, but it's DEEP. He's got *both* heads on, un-cut. When I first saw his kit (from the "uneducated" perspective of a 70's rocker), I thought, "Oh brother, what a dweeb". My jaw dropped when I heard it! Talk about "BOOM" without the "twang" (if you will)! And it CUTS THRU! I love it. He's got a bit of dampening in it (a cut blanket "fixed" in place. He said it took him a while to get it set and tuned, but it "sounds" like it was worth it. Only problem is mic placement when you record. You get allot of "bleed" from all the other "sources". But it records as good as it sounds live. Don't know if you want to mess with the aggravation of the setup, but I can email him and get his particulars if you want?

Thanks for the replies! The reason why I want to go taller rather than deeper is because Yamaha makes the Oak Custom kit with a 17" deep kick for all different sizes. But I'm already having them custom making the BD for me with out any mounting hardware for the toms. So I'll have to e-mail them and find out if they can make it deeper. Thanks jmail, if you could email him that'd be great(just in case Yamaha will custom make it).

Shay, J.R.,
I'm still waiting on a phone call or email from the old guitar player/new drummer guy... Maybe it's a trade secret?

Yeah I would tottally go for 24" bass drum. Id go a deeper. For the big bass sound your looking for I think this would be great for you. It gives you that huge sound that is still controled. Great for alot of different settings. I also like 24" because it gives you the sound and free's up space around the kit...
