About audio interfaces, need help!

Ill be honest, i know very little about computer recording, but my biggest question regards audio interfaces and how they work with the pc. i guess the easiest way to ask my question would be to state what im looking for; i need something with at least 6 inputs that will go into the computer and record as six different tracks for editing. the idea of having two inputs to the computer is good, but i need to be able to have almost complete control over a drum kit. ive seen a few decently priced items for this, but i dont know how they work with the computer. does each input go to a different track on the software? (kinda like an input on a standalone recorder has its own fader) and if so, what kind of software will support this? basically, i want to be able to have the same control over the mix as i have with my fostex vf160 but on my computer (have control over each instrument, bass drum, snare, hat, guitar, etc...) any help i can get would be awesome.

M-Audio Delta 1010 will do you great. There are others that have the same functionality of the 1010 that just came out lately that might be cheaper, others will know here. The 1010 has 10 inputs and 10 outputs, MIDI and a digital in and out. I bought one of these just for drums like you are wanting. I'll explain my setup to help you understand what you will need. I have a PC running Sonar 3.11 (4 is out now). I have a Delta 1010 soundcard with 10ins/10outs availability. I have a Soundcraft M12 that has 12 preamp channels with direct outs on every channel. I got this board because a regular board has only sub outs, mains outs, monitor outs, or stereo returns that can be used for the output on the board. This Soundcraft gave me the extra outs (one on every channel) so I could record everything individually. Each mic I use on the drums goes into my Soundcraft board, then I have cables from every directout on the channels I'm using going to each input on the Delta. So, I used 9 mics on my buddy's drumset (huge) and so I had 9 channels used on the board going to 9 inputs on the Delta and had setup 9 tracks in Sonar on my PC to record them. Make sense sort of?

Any software that is even reasonable good can support recording on as many track as you have inputs in your sound card. I agree, the Delta 1010 sounds like a good choice for ya'll, or, the ESP 1010 from ESI www.esi-pro.com

Yeah, Noize2u should be wrapping up a review for the ESP 1010 before too long, all I know is that he is lovin the card...haven't gotten brutal details, but hopefully will over the weekend as we are trying to get out for beers...

Yep, just to second dB on the ESI ESP 1010 interface. I was using their Waveterminal 192M which was reviewed awhile back. Replaced my Delta 44 permanantly with it. Now I am probably going to go the same route with the ESP 1010. That will remain in the main studio box and the Waveterminal will be moved to the back up box to be used mostly for softsynth output to the mixer.

But yes, I am loving it as well. I dont see me gong back to M-Audio stuff anytime soon. Not that there is anything wrong, I am just happier with the performance of the ESI stuff.

ESP1010 is really a great value too. Easy to find it for $310. The closest unit I think, may be the Echo Layla 3G...it has 2 Headphone outputs and 6db more spec'd dynamic range, but otherwise very similar in function and its $413.
