congrats on the baby!

unless you and your wife both make good money, my wife and I found that we were actually further ahead having her quite her job and stay home with our kids...she made more than the cost of daycare per month, but compound that with the value of actually raising your own child as opposed ot a daycare person, well, it was an easy choice for us.

Regardless, a hearty congratulations, you are about to partake on the hardest job you'll ever have.

Ya, congrats xtc! But dB speaks some good truth there about the wife at home thing. That can save ya the day care bill for sure.

my wife makes about 30k more than i do!! lol! so if anyone is staying home its me, i would love to be able to do it, but i already have a pretty hefty child support payment, im thinking of going part time and having the baby in daycare a couple days a week instead of all 5 days or maybe start my own thing and contract out my services. lots to ponder in the next 9 months, first and foremost is a healthy baby. ;)

congrats XTC hope all goes well (why not use the stroller as a portable rack system LOL) I know what child support payments are like (shure -pun intended- keeps the material purchasing list small)

So you know... I'm an at home dad since I make considerably less than my wife. I think that it is very important to avoid daycare until your child is old enough to tell you what goes on there but I know that not everyone is able to do this. My son and I have a great bond that I wouldn't trade for the world.

And did I mention that we are expecting #2 already? The boys will be a year apart. Yeah... tough times ahead for me too.

All this on top of building a commercial recording studio. So, XTC, it can be done. Again I wish you the best of luck. Things have a way of working out.

Congrats XTC!

I agree with these peeps. Wife makes more, no shame in that. You stay home with the kids, that will be great. Save money and be in your kids life!

i hope i can stay home!! id love to do it!! i definately have paranoid feelings about sending my newborn to daycare, someone has a bad day and who knows what could happen. is this type of thinking super paranoid?

i was raised by babysitters, daycares, relatives, tharapists, and public schools....and in my family, there is ZERO affection....my family dosn't generely getalong all that great, we're up to our ears in debt, and mom's already got one suiside attempt behind her....RAISE YOUR KIDS YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!! it's definately healthier. our family dosn't even feel like one. it's a sad but not uncommon state of affairs in this country...both parents workin' 40+ hours in the pursuit of material things (home included)that supposedly make life better....i disagree strongly!! i'd rather take a month off of work and spend it on the lake with a cannue (sp?) then to take the powereboat for a spin 3 weekends out of the year.

Not at all paranoid. While surely not the norm, bad things happen in daycare sometimes...my wife worked at a couple daycares before I met her and she left cuz she couldn't stand it...I have also had some horror stories from friends that used them.

My wife and I have NEVER ONCE dropped our kids at a day care except for grandma's or auntie's house once in a while while we went out for dinner and a movie or sumthin'.

I agree WYD. My wife and I don't have as much as some of our neighbors and friends and whatnot...but we made that decision a long time ago, we would NEVER buckle under that "whoever dies with the most toys wins" mentality. Many of our friends do, and many of them are in debt up to their eyeballs...not us.

yeah that's how my dad is....

he came home with a parody of a best buy logo on his shirt that read...

Poor Guy

he who dies with the most toys wins

we now have a brand new SSR in the driveway...i refuse to drive it

if you try some times, ya just might find, ya get what you need...

though I'm hopelessly single and therfore don't have kids... my extended family generally has excessive ammounts of kids. I have heard that after 3 kids it's doesn't cost much extra or take more time... Looking at my grandparents, having a massive amount of kids makes life a lot easier in the long run...if it's finances just think of being a grandparent with ten kids at Christmas... you'll make out like a bandit :)

"My gear buying days are coming to an end"

First off, congratulations. Second, your gear buying days are not over. Matter of fact, it is going to increase drastically. It's just not for YOU anymore. jk

Anyways, if this is your first child, you are about to experience one of life's greatest pleasures. I wish you all the best.

ha naw, she just explains how the world works to her children in such a good way...none of that "the whole world is evil" stuff....more like "some times good people do bad things". i've known her since she's had one, she's been pregnant pretty much the whole time i've known her.

Congrats xtc & el musico!!! As information (too much, already?) I just got finished with changing a #2 on #2 son. He's still not quite there with the potty, but we're working on it. (Man, this place has gone *soft*.)

Instead of tape - oops - disks, you'll be buying boxes of diapers. $35 a crack. Wet wipes. And the worst, clothes & shoes. But what you get in exchange... indescribably indescribable. I've been trying to come up with a song, opposite of JC Fogerty's "Someday Never Comes". Not quite there.

Share stuff with them in what you do, who you are. I've got 2 sets of el-cheapo cans (not really plugged in) that they can grab. I've got my old Casio cheese-board for them to hammer on. And they've got a $30 kids' guitar to "share". I've recorded with them for my sound checks. Makes it easier with 3 people making noise. Takes about three times as long to do something, but it's great. And someday, you'll be going thru the grocery store and the kid'll pop-off the lyrics to a song you dig and you'll go "that's MY kid!"

Yep, kids are the greatest thing around. But ya gotta give more then you get sometimes. My oldest, 24 is kind of a bum. He recently moved back in with his mother and stepfather. He is way to old for that, but he quit school several years ago, and hasnt gotten his GED so decent work isnt easy for him. Still, I have no pity for him. He choose that path even after all we gave him for guidance.

The next one down is now 22 and traveling with several differant bands and writng his own tunes and such. Glad he turned out OK and is enjoying the adventures as I did while still young enough to appreciate it.

The last 2, 15 and 12 are sometimes a pain, but I wouldnt trade them for anything. They were by my side from the beggining of rebuilding the studio. They have had the chance to meet evey kind of person imaginable due to my involvement in music. And both are now becoming very interested in getting involved in music as well. They have gained the respect of many of my friends who wonder how they turned out the way they did. And really I credit it to them meeting people like dB, and many of the msuic people I either associated with in the past, or still associate with.

They often will come in and help me listen to music posted by members here, and as well often have very interesting comments on things I might miss. They even know many of you by name just from reading over my shoulder. They are still amazed at the community here. And I look forward to the day they both get brave enough to join in the fun here as well.

WE have actually started a little project I hope to have finished in a few weeks. Using the new Project 5 v2 they are slowly learning to craft some music.

But ya, enjoy every moment you can with your kids. The time will come when they remember all those times, and look back on them with good feelings.

Ya, we try to get out at least 2 or 3 times a week. Maybe just for a burger, chinese or something. And the music stores maybe once a week. And the 22 year old, good son will be coming through town sometime this summer, so the younger two are excited as they havent seen him again now for almost 2 years.

I am sure you will do the same as well. It really isnt all that hard. I just learned to enjoy what they do, and they in turn try what I like. You should see us at the arcade. We get on one of those multi-player driving games and are constantly reaching ove smacking one an other to foul each other up, and the looks we get are pretty funny sometimes. Then we spend the next couple hours laughing about the looks on peoples faces. I'm just a big kid really. I have Peter Pan syndrome. :-)

Congrats man...hope it all works oot cool and aye, if ye can, stop working and loko after the kids.

If I could, I would. The wife works part time, my parents/her parents look after em in the morning and my eldest daughter (nearly 4) goes to nursery now, soon to be school. The wee man is only 11 months but he;s happy anyways....he loves his nana + granda...

Anyways, as for buying gear, I hear myself talking about gear and not buyin it - ye get used to it - its better to buy stuff for the family then, if the chance arises, grab a sneaky wee compressor here or a plugin there ;-p !! hehe.

As long as everyone gets...its all good. And I can say, they all get more than me but I GET a quiet life so I am happy! anyway, jokin aside, family - its THE most important thing man.

ENJOY..and get ready for those sleeeeeeeepless nights (but dont do what I done for a while - locate your studio in the loft above the kids room and wake em up at 11pm!! DOHHHHHHHHH!)>

Cheers

Coco.

thank you all for the stories and kind words, i think my gear buying days coming to an end will be a good thing, i think i spend more time obsessing about gear(reading reviews, browsing the online retailers, etc) than i do playing and trying to create music!! everything happens for a reason! no?~?

noize, your are the dad i want to be!!! i have a 15 year old son and a 5 year old daughter, my son lives with his mom in annapolis,md so i dont get to see him as much, but when hes around we are close and i get into his world, i buy him cds all the time, hes really into snow patrol and flogging molly these days.

my daughter is awesome, wed. night she started this thing conducting thing, she has a wand some barbie thing and conducts me while i play my guitar thru my Gr-33 i put on a nice violin patch and she waves her wand and i try to follow her lead, when she puts the wand down i have to stop and man she means stop!!!its a blast and she really loves it because she gets to be the boss!!! i record her all the time, im trying to get the time to break all of her singing and her keyboard playing, into loops and create some songs with it.

thats cool, me and my 6 year old daughter do that, where she is in charge of the songs...she comes up with cool little riffs on the piano, when I hear a neat one we go downstairs, open up Project 5 or something and sequence what she was doing...we drop some drums in it, other instruments and make little compositions...since we all started Martial Arts the music hasn't been happening so much...but, well, bonding by fighting is pretty cool too. I help her practice her Kenpo techniques too.

She is scheduled to get her Orange stripe a week from today (which is also my birthday). I "stripe" is saying that that child is preparing to test for the "belt"...so essentially that she is one her way to her Orange Belt. Kids get stripes, adults do not, it's sort of a motivational thing for kids to show some sort of progress and keep their interest a bit by some tangible token of the progress.

Congrat, congrats! Well done, lad. Bloodied the eye of medical science there!

Have to agree with dB-Wan. Do what you can to have one parent with the kid. It's hard, but it can be done. I too have child support payments. It can be done. It can also be done with occasional purchases from MF......As Coco mentioned, you just have to be sneaky.

Just make sure that when someone says, "Awwww, what a cute baby....I'll babysit..." you get it in writing, hopefully notarized. Cash those suckers in!!!! Amazing how many people back out when the reality hits! Make them pay for saying "I'll babysit." Make them babysit!

Congratulations, XTC. Good on you. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
