That damn free protools thing

So i read the Q's and A's on the digidesign website, and it says "this product is not compatible with Windows XP" and was like, haha, that cant be true. So i downloaded it, installed it , and ran it and it says "DAE error 1113". I fixed that by installing the Pro tools wave driver from digidesign.com

Now it gets to the point where it checks the memory. It now Says "DAE memory is low".

Any ideas on how to get Pro tools free running on XP?

BTW ive checked the digidesign site. no help there that i saw.

Cheers

We were going to download that for the PC just so we could do some simple things, but yeah, no XP compatability yet i'm afraid as far as i could tell either. I asked around at the time and got no joy either.

Ahhh...that'll be the digidesign's world renowned compatability awards i.e. they are bloody useless!!

Still..if ye spend a fortune on their hardware etc, they will make their stuff work for ya.

Aye, Id rather use a tascam 4 track cassette recorder than a digidesign bit of recording hardware in principle (no offence to anyone using 4 track tape)...

Good luck tho CS...

so... it's a free application that is known to be incompatible with XP, so you download it and it doesn't work and you're upset? funny.

The free version of PT is so old anyway... from the 4.something days.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. it's incompatible, game over.

The only way I could imagine it ever working on an NT-based OS would be to run it in Win98 compatibility mode. Right-click on the executable, go to the "compatibility" tab and check the box that says "run this program in compatibility mode for..." and select Win98/WinSE.

I really doubt if that'll work, but its worth a shot. There are some other good free multitrackers, and some good ones that cost < $100 too. Heck even Cubase has a $100 version now that I really want.

yeah tad, but the system compatiblity features in XP are very hit or miss...I don't use them for anything other than little games for my kids...

Flame: I thought it up one day. I ought to change it to a more title-esque "Never finishes anyth" but I haven't taken the 30 seconds to do it yet :)

yeah dB, I don't think that I've had that compatibility thing work except once, and it was for some little executable and not a complex application. But, anything's worth a shot in a losing battle :)

True, I hear ya, but as I recall CS has Cubase (memory might be off, I am getting older), so going to an old, lame free version of ProTools that wasn't even that good in the days it was created, seems kinda self-defeating.

Also, it's not just compatibility with the OS, but also the sound device...which is likely to be more of a problem...

Well, im not going to an old version of pro tools. Im doing a course in auckland in sound engineering, and they use pro tools and logic. So i thought, hell why not get some experience on it before we start practicle's.

So just wondering aye.

(and yes im still using cubase)

Running windows 98 compatibility still doesnt work......

Ah well.

Download Kristal. It's great!
Free. Did I mention Free?

And you're not at the mercy of the evil Digidesign team....

I've been using Kristal and it does a very competent job for a freebie. There are a couple of drawbacks to it that make me want to spring for real software though. Only 2 inserts? It's software! Make the max # of inserts infinite! And it doesn't recognize all 4 of my Delta's inputs individually, only as 2 either stereo or mono inputs.

I saw somebody on here not too long ago that was using Audacity to record. I haven't tried that but I'm curious how it performs as a multitracker.

I think that if you know your way around any multitracker, then you should pick up ProTools pretty quickly. I haven't used it myself, but remember that all multitrackers accomplish the same things (almost), and they all do it in about the same way. I don't think that its going to be an alien landscape when you open ProTools for the first time. It'll just be a different set of keyboard shortcuts and different menus to memorize. I think that you'll already have a leg up since you've done some recording yourself, even if it was with Cubase.
