Live Input Monitoring

In SONAR 3 P.E., can I record my guitar track while using an effects plugin? Will I that plugin come out in the recording? I'm not sure if I am being totally clear, but I don't really know how to ask this...

Not sure about Sonar, but the best thing to do would be to record the guitar dry, but have the effect on the monitor side. This way you can get an idea for the sound you want without recording the effect - thus loosing the ability to correctly modify later should you need to. As the saying goes " you can always add but you can't take away".

signal comes into PC, is dry. when it's sent over to the monitor part of the sound circuitry, you can either monitor it dry, or add some sort of effects, so you can hear your signal with effects. This doesn't change the signal, only the monitored part of the signal. You would want to write the signal onto the hard drive in the dry fashion, then apply the same (or different) effects after the signal is written. This way you can always adjust the effect when mixing, withoug being stuck with the affected signal.

If you are monitoring with some effects turned on, I don't think the actual signal gets recorded with the effects. There may be a setting for that, but I would strongly advise against it. That's why the PC is so darn useful, many options, instead of stuck with the sound you recorded.

see i have never had to do that yet....what i would do is set up an aux send and bus and throw the effects on the buss, and route that to your monitors. but i'm sure the've got an easer way.

anyone else?

Well, no it wont record while you miniter it live. You will have to add it in the track after recording it. But yes you can hear it while you record it, so you can get the feel of what it will end up like after recording.

Thanks my brothas! That actually helped me out tremendously. It's true in this situation..."you can always add but you can't take away". Great point.
