ok i need your opinions (help) on the mix as of last night (er this mourning)....

one of the key issues i've been having is the low end (i need punch with LOWS) but have had issues with .1 systems with subs. if anyone has a sub woofer, how does it sound compaired to other stuff that's out there (prefferably in a close genra)

another is the toms, i can't seem to give them balls...any ideas?

snare - do ya think i got too much of a reverb tail on it?

and guitars in relation to the vocals, do ya think the vocals need to be pushed a bit more "back" in the mix?

much appreciation all, i'm pluggin' these boards in my thank yous on the album.

Vocals do seem to be a little loud compared to guitars, but seem right compared to the snare. Snare sounds good to me. Not sure what to do with toms, I rarely use them in my music, so I don't know what works with them. What I did once, though was add reverb before compressing, and it gave some cool punch, don't know if that would work for this style though.

For lows, bass sounds nice to me. But I can't hear any low end on the kick. There's no thump. For reference, I am streaming lo fi, and am on a decent set of computer speakers with a 2.1.

OK first off... I'm listening on headphones...

I don't think there's too much verb on the vocals.. I think it sounds just right...

Distortion guitars could come up a bit

Drums sound fine to me... if you don't like the toms... Just solo the track and loop a part , put a equalizer on it and make a little notch boost and slide left to right till ya get the sound you like...

Sorry I can't be of anymore help..
anyway I think it sounds great allready! I'm sure you're gonna make this rock even more

This is tops!

Love the bass sound!

I agree the guitars really need to punch through! The build up to them commands it!

For the Toms's have you read DB's thing? Says 60hz - 200hz for Tom's.

Can't wait to hear the finished product!

ok i just updated the mix!! everything is sitting nicely now....my biggest concern is do ya think i'm dooin' too much "stereoized" vocals and too many overdubs gooin' at once? the bass player is from the punk world, and he wants things to be more "raw" with the vocals...also what do ya think about the old police siren i threw in there? have i gone to far??

thanx all

oh you can hear the new version on my brand new shiney HRC PRO site now!!!

Sounds pretty good WYD, but for the style of music is sounds too clean to me.

The guitars IMO should be slappin' ya in the face when the distorted guitars come in but they sound very reserved and controlled for lack of a better description. I mean they have a nice heavy sound but they're just not conveying the build to me. Of course that could be the sound the band and you are going for, and nothing wrong with that.

Bass & drums sound very good. Vocals sound good, possibly a bit low in the mix, but with further listening maybe not (hows that for fence sitting :D.

Good job overall, I'd just work some more on the distored guitars, maybe a little more hi-mid
frequencys or something.

cool i definately will do that...and maybe automate the faders to come up a bit in the chorus to boot!

i am having issues with the first verse vocals beein' louder than the second...easy fix though

do ya think they need to come up in the first verse (or even over the whole song) or just that second verse?

thanks dan

Just the second verse. IMO. But then... you already knew I would say that.

First chance I have had to listen dude. Very nice indeed, I like it. Wanted to hear more for sure.

I was not sure about the guitars either, but after the second listen they kinda felt right as is.

Heeeeyyy wyd, what gear and settings did ya use on the bass man?

Howd you get that wicked sounding low tom in the first drum fill of the last chorus before the end that soughta detunes itself??

Wow, great mix wyd, great mix.

ok the mix has been updated, i brought the vocals way up!! gave some top end (4k) to both guitars...as for the floor tom!!!! omg right when the song fades out on this mix, he hits just the floor tom, but i was embarrassed to put it in....i've been fighting this floortom for a long time, and it will continue to be a problem for the whole project. we used Sennheiser (sp?) 421's (clip on) for the top three toms, we ran outta those so we slapped a 451 on the floor tom (we shouldda used a 57) well this 451 has a 5 way selectable switch for the bass response, and we first hooked it up and it was MUD! so i ran to the drum room grabbed the knob and moved it a few clicks down....turns out that i went too far and it now sounds like cardboard...you'll hear it in my next update (prolly the whole song this time!!)....as for the bass gear....

Earnie Ball 5 st. gooin' into an Ampeg SVT Pro amp, into an Ampeg 8x10" cab with the tweeter attenuated about 40%. (any less and it got too hissy)

we stuck a D112 about 2-3 feet back and also went direct from the head....

as for settings, i don't remember but i do know we had that amp as loud as it would go before the room started resonating, i rolled off the super-lows on the amps eq, the direct was (pre eq though)

mixing hmmm i gotta tap my memory......ok so we had two tracks both were compressed and eqed to taste then i had two auxes on the mic track. one gooin' to a shitty plugin distortion (mixed very low but if you crank up the intro you can hear it, and the other aux has a flanger on it (i was tryin' to give it more bite and growel, and bring out the pick) i had to be real careful though, if i put too much of the flange in, i would get phase issues, and that is something you definately don't want on a bass!

anyway if ya have time you can check out the new mix...i still have one verse, chorus and outtro to do, but i should have a whole song up tommrow.

thanks all and by all means, let me know if something is not right!!

I guess it's too late for this now, but using a kick mic on the toms will give it more balls. When my sales rep from Sweetwater told me that, I thought he was just trying to get me to spend more money, but a kick mic can be a nice secret weapon to bring things out of the mix.

Now I just wish it was the whole damn track. I am liken it wyd. Been listening from behind the scenes and not makin any comments as you were gettin plenty of help from the others. Anyway, its sounding really good, the bass is much more defined now in this mix. I will give another listen tommorrow when I can crank it up a bit.
