what can protools do for you?

1. It can take your money faster
2. It can make you call a long distance number for tech support and put you on hold for 6 hours.

...thats about it... :)

it can also limit the # of tracks you can make unless you get an HD system.

Yep, not to bash PT anymore, but it really a matter of money. PT is a very large investment in both hardware and software. It is all proprietary and doesnt play well with others.

But as Geoff stated, For the money you would spend on 16 channels of PT dedicated hardware/software you can have 24 channels or more of dedicated hardware/software of Cubase, Sonar, Logic and so on.

Cubase and Sonar are basicly only limited channel wise by your PC and its hardware.

the only thing protools can do for you is impress clients and help get a job in the "industry"...At another forum people were very rude because I didnt have "high end"gear and a protools rig when I said **** a pro tool and **** the industry standard! they got mad mmm I wonder why?lol, those guys focus to much on flashy gear than actually making good music so needless to say I don't go there to much any more.

I agree with everything here, though i don't think pro-tools will be history for a long time to come. They have a huge hold on the market due to advertising and promotion, also, the all-in-one package is very marketable for people who don't want to learn more about the ins and outs of recording. It's sad but it's come to the point where people won't book time in studios that aren't using pro-tools as it's such a buzz word term right now. It's kind of emperor's new clothes IMO, no-one wnats to say 'actually, it's not better, it's just an option'. Shame really.

General FYAH, they do have the upper hand of hype and market share, they do still control the high-end studio market, but, those places generally have the very expensive HD systems, not a Digi002.

When you get down to the price range of other gear, comparing Sonar and Cubase w/sound cards to equal priced PT gear such as the Digi001 or Digi002 they stack up pretty evenly, each having their good points and bad points.

My personal opinion, if I have the money someday to get a full PT HD rig I would do it, but as long as I am a typical home/project studio owner like everyone else here, I'll be sticking with Sonar software and ESI sound cards.

One plus I can think of for the small PT systems is fairly local to Detroit. The Hip Hop sceen here is very 'colaborative'. There is a lot of networking going on and most of the folks in the Genre here have PT systems. Just makes it a little easier to 'fit in'.

I've been looking at the Yamy OX1 for a bit now. I still havn't had time to look at all of the specs. and unfortunately we do not have it hooked up to a Cubase rig at the shop. It is compatable to SX, but I like to 'drive' these things myself to make that decision. Yami now owns Stienberg so I expect the compatability will continue to increase as long as that mariage holds.

Ben has a nice desk complete with one and a spare for parts. Real cheap, They are nice if you want to go that route. But myself, I will still prefer doing all my automation in Sonar as it works more then well for me. I've grown to like my little mouse. I wont deny there will come the day when I would like to have a bank of faders and knobs to do my automation, but for now I will live as is.
