Gapping/Skipping during playback

Those of you that have hyperthreading, what operating system are you using? I have a gapping, skipping problem with playback. It's the same sound you would hear when playing an LP that skips. It only occurs when lead guitar tracks are playing. Obviously, the processor isn't reading info fast enough.

Here'w what I'm working with: Vegas 2.0 Audio, Windows 2000, 2.8 hyperthread, FIC board with 800 FSB, 1 gig of ram, EMU 0404 sound card.

Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.

Does it do it if you solo just the lead guitar track?

It only happens when running all tracks. I'm running a maximum of 10 tracks at a time. Wondering if using a different operating system would work. Curious to know what operating system others are using.

Yes, some apps prefer it to be off. I also prefer XP Pro and havent had any hardware or software issues with it and its updated completely to SP2 as well. Dont know if there a huge differance between XP Pro and home, but I believe their is less crap in Pro.

I highly doubt the processor is the problem, I'd guess as the buss / drivers. Also there could be an issue with the HD writing/reading slower than wanted. It could be that there's a program running in the background that's running some hi-priority cycles every so often, sucking the cycles from other stuff. A 2.8 should be able to run 20 tracks or more without problem.

I was using w2k, but will probably use xp home when I rebuild.

PJK, are you suggesting the buss speed on the board is too slow? Are you also saying the board drivers should be updated? I'm using w2k updated to SP4. I've checked task manager and no programs are running in the background.

Whosyourdaddy and Noize2u, why have hyperthreading if you are going to turn it off? Don't get that part.

Thanks for everyone's help

Because most software doesnt take advantage of it. And if it does it is usually implemented poorly.

Well...guess what I found out? Hyperthread will only work on Linux 2.4, XP Home and XP Pro. It will not work on w2k. I disabled it and no change with the skipping. Looks like I may have to upgrade to XP. This is so frustrating. I will be right in the middle of recording a vocal track and the skipping begins. Only way to avoid it is to create wav file of all music tracks and record vocals on top of it. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for everyone's help.
