Getting too distorted sound when I crank up my amp to record

I have a Mesa Boogie F50 combo amp for guitar. When I turn it up to record it gets distorted. It is not at full volume, so I believe that there would be something interfering with the signal when the sound travels through my distortion pedal. Should I just turn it down or is there anything I can do to purify the signal? Any other suggestions?

I can't quite get what you're referring to,

some ideas:

the amp is supposed to get distorted, but that's not the distortion you're talking about. You mean something else entering in?

when i turn it up to record, do you mean turn up the volume on the amp? or turn up the gain on your recording device? not sure what you mean.

interfering with my signal, through my dist pedal. If it's sounding wrong going into the amp from dist pedal, then it'll sound wrong on a recording. garbage in, garbage out is the saying.

i'm thinking maybe the microphone (are you using one) may be clipping? or maybe cables are bad? or dist pedal is running outta battery juice?

there's just not enough details to get a clear idea. more info please.

yeah i agree, you gotta follow the signal from your guitar, into any pedals, into your amp (through each 'knob' and 'button') out to the speaker, into the mic, then the preamp....after that are the A/D converters, on to the media (disk)....any one of those places are a place where distortion can occure. follow the path, and the answer will come...heh anyway good luck and let us know where you get it narrowed down to.

Yea sorry about the lack of detail. I turn up the volume on my amp and the noise gets distorted (more distorted than I would ever want it. It sounds fine atb lower volumes, but when it gets loud it gets bad. The cables from my guitart to the amplifier could or could not be in bad shape. Ill check that one. Also, would a pedal that claims it filters out interference be a good purchase? Thanks for the replies.

Well Mesa Boogies are high-gain amps. If it's all-tube, then remember that the more master volume you push through it, the more the power tubes break up and distort along with the preamp tubes. Recording at high volumes really takes less preamp distortion, so try to turn the preamp gain further down when you turn the master gain up. The sound of power tubes breaking up is a beautiful thing :)

Otherwise, you may want to have a tech look at the amp to make sure that the power tubes are in good shape, and make sure that the amp itself is in good working order. It'd be a pity to fry such a nice amp.
