Hey Guys
Some joy to share with ya's!!!
I have just had a mate pop over and ask me to record his gig....nice litle start!! With a 1000 capacity BIG prestigious venue where I live...
I wont actually be engineering the gig tho this will be done via a pro setup with sound and lighting engineer (its used for some big gigs/bands - recently seen The Proclaimers there myself!!!).
Anyway, I'll be recording their gig using my new Fostex VF160 (better get used to it then eh!!). I'll be taking the mix from the main desk and simply recording this for my mate...technically speaking not a True mixing job but still a start and a nice little piece of work.
I wont make much but some free beers and approx enough to cover some more MIC's perhaps for a direct recording (they are happy to take the house engineers mix) and I'll master it for em too. 1 1/2 hrs audio...sweet!!

hey if they don't like the mix, you can always blame it on the house engineer!!! hehehe sounds like a good time, i've done two recordings like that (just a mono mix from the board)...if you show up a bit early, you can ask the engineer to pan things out a bit, otherwise you'll be workin' in mono land.

Live gigs are great if ya can get a nice direct feed outa the console. Especially if ya got the inputs for it and can adjust the incoming levels and such.

Aye, it could be sweet. At this point, Im no sure what the setup will be but I am hoping the big aszed mixer will have many outs/sub outs/etc so if the dude mixes it up and has many buses, I could do ma own "proper" mix which would rock!!
Its all good experience for me and I'll make approx $100 or just under which is good enough for me for a first job. I can live with that as the place itself has hosted some top bands including The Proclaimers, Oasis and some other biggies...COOL.
In terms of worst case scenario, if I just get 2 outs from the main desk, this should still suffice as the engineer will be "no bad" I'd imagine (tho I could bump him off for a shot of the big one - the 6 or 7k rig with lights etc)..ROCKIN!

This here gig is tomorrow night. I since found out its a 5k rig and a nice one too. I'll be simply recording a stereo mix I think to I have 8 ins to play with for submixes I could get...I dunno.

Man, what a blast an a half that wis for sure!! Jeeeezus..I got all 8 channels from the biggest MOMMMA mixing desk ye ever did see, and one of the loudest PA's I ever heard yet clear as a bell!
What a ride that was. The dude doing the FOH sound gave me a line for everything he had (must've been at least 48 tracks soundcraft - maybe more) AT LEAST 13-14 rack jobs and man, a cool dude to boot.
The dude gave me all the wires etc, sorted me out with a nice test mix...sweeeet. He had all the MIC'in done and all I done was sort my own mix on the Fostex. I couldnt have asked for more. I tell ya, im lovin that gig man. And, it raised £6000 for charity...cool.
Now, I have 8 tracks, 1.38 mins per track, thats over 12hrs to download to Cubase! ARRGH! But, coooool...what a sweeet gig and no doubt. Now its 1.02am and Im deied...time for bed. In arounda week, I'll post ya some stuff from it tho..cool.

Apr 30, 2005 10:58 am Yah, I wont disagree there bud. I tell ye, the company he works for are fairly big over here with corporate clients etc and for such a big co, desk and generally pro engineer the guy was sound and SPOT ON!
Which as ye say, helped me a million I can tell ya. He didnt even offer me the stereo out I expected and even went so far as to say it wasnt worth doing that way, and proceeded to rig up 8 outs directly from his massive desk to the fostex !!! What a top bloke.
I am just dumpin the tracks into the PC now as we speak...I'll now be able to get a good mix for the band which is cool as I thought all I'd be doing was dumpin a premix, ready to master.

Apr 30, 2005 05:16 pm Thats great coco, it is cool he sorted ya out with a full 8 channels. I bet he was expectin ya and was allready prepared to hook ya up by the sounds of it. Not a lot of FOH guys at places like that that would bend that far to accomadate ya. Glad it worked out.
May 01, 2005 03:51 am I think the guy from the band let him know at 4.30 on the day of the gig (kickin off at 10.00!).
But, to be fair, the dude gave me all connections, leads, looms etc reqd, all jacks and helped me oot with the soundcheck...they arent the venue sound but in fact a firm dealng with live sound engineering here in Edinburgh - which is handy.
So, all in all, a good night. I even checked oot all back stage where the Proclaimers and Oasis played, 2 of my fav bands...ye canny whack it!

May 02, 2005 07:03 am Cheers Mike...aye - it was very cool except I just lost all the files I transferred to the PC and cleaned the Fostex!!
So, if I dont get back these files, about 11 hours work and all hope of the payment for the gig - gone!!!!
Not to mention a mate (who may be an ex-mate) screamin for ma blood!! See the other thread I just posted....Ohhhhh dear!
Cheers tho - the actual recording/gig and usign teh Fostex went swimmingly cool.

May 02, 2005 04:19 pm Cheers Dan...so far the app I am using has checked 22M sectors!!!!!!! It has taken almost 24hrs and has recovered 576 files but I dunno if these were all deleted or not..surely some were tho as there si a good few takes which I presume Id have deleted.
Im hopinh its moving logically across the drive which means the last files I lost and stupidly deleted will be last (tho at the rate its going, it'll literarly take me a week to find out!!).
But, the gig was cool :-)
My being stupid was just dumbazed as hell :-( !!

May 09, 2005 05:16 pm Well...in the end...its all good!!!
I got most all of it back and with some creative work (I lost about 40 mins of backing vocals) I used the bleed on a MIC'd amp which wasnt always used but left on throughout the whole 1hr 41 mins for the backing vocals I left (normalised, panned and double tracked and viola - makeshift vocals)...at least the main bits were all intact.
1 week on and I have just given the finished CD, all tracked, mixed and mastered to my bud. Just got an email a wee while ago - he loved it!! LOVINNNNN IT I AM!!
I got away with the closest shave of ma life man!! ALWAYS BACKUP GUYS....ALWAYS!!
And now, I go for beer...take it easy guys.
