Hey, I use WaveLab lite, but I don't really know it's functions too well, aside from playing back wave files and reversing em. Heh, that's always fun. What is this program used for mainly?

its a lot like soundforge by sonic foundry.. its for sound editing and mastering.

i used to use sound forge.. but i tried out wavelab 4 a couple weeks ago and i am never going back. wavelab 4 is so good.

I agree, WaveLab 4 is awesome, because of some plugin standards and such I lost a couple of my plugins for use in WaveLab 4 (Waves L1 Ultramaximizer being the main one).

Loki, WaveLab is for "mastering", that being final preparation of your mixed, stereo recording for duplication and distribution. It is where you normalize, maximize and dynamically prepare your songs for what will be it's final version.

Mastering is an art unto itself, which I guess is why I have made a pretty decent business out of doing just mastering and restoration.

I prefer WaveLab to sound forge for several reasons, I think it re-paints the sinewaves faster, processes effects faster and is easier to work with plugins and such. The only place where Sound Forge really out-performs WaveLab is in Video sybncing and streaming encoding, WaveLab does nothing with video and really kinda sucks at mp3 and streaming media encoding...but that is the only ways Sound Forge is superior in my opinion.

But that is just my two cents.

I see. I have no idea how to master... I just use Cubasis to record tracks, Mix em, add effects into em, remix to make sure that it sounds okey, save the file as a wave file and then send it to wavelab to make sure it sounds cool like that, then burn to a CD... guess I'm not really using that program to it's potential

nope, you're not even touching the potential of Wavleab, and presumably the power of you music either...a good mastering job can make worlds of difference in the power and professionalism of your sound.

dB, why do you think WaveLab sucks at mp3 encoding? Because it's slow, or you find the quality of encoded files to be inferior?

I htink the interface to do it is nice, but I find the encoding isn't that great or fast.

However, in all honesty, I think mp3 quality as a whole kinda sucks, so my opinion is very bias...I have heard better mp3 encodings than WaveLab's, but I have yet to hear a "quality" mp3...

does that make sense?!

The best MP3 encoder is of coarse the Fraunhofer encoder. That is what is in Sonar and CakeWalk. He is the man who wrote the code for MP3 encoding.
