Yet another lame question but....

I transfer my recording from a VS1680 multitracker this is done from the master outs to the PC (stereo for each track) would i be better of bringing in the tracks on a mono signal (panning hard left and right as appropriate)thus quickening the whole input to PC process, then playing with the track in a mono state then converting to a stereo track later on for mixing down.

Depends on how you've recorded the track or if you've panned the track in your multi-tracker. If the track was recorded with one microphone, you can "convert" it to mono with no problem. If you used more than one mic when recording a source, or if you used something like a modeler or reverb effects or other effects that create stereo sound, then you will want to transfer in stereo to keep that effect. I hope this makes sense.

yeah pan two tracks at a time when dumpin' them into your computer (i've done this lots with my 1680) as long as it's not a stereo track (ie : 15/16) you're good. one sound source = mono. be sure to do a sound check first and record just a few seconds...i've found sometimes the playback of the 1680 sometimes is not 'in line' with the soundcard that is sampling at the same rate....this didn't happen alot but i did hafta re-record a few things here and there. one thing, you can use the RCA style SPDIF outs on the 1680 into the 1/8" digital input on the soundblaster (if it has one) and that'll save you the quality loss of reconverting. if not, remember to set your master and channel faders to unity, hmm now that i think about it, i guess it's best just to get the signal as hot as you can.

peace

thanks 4 that you 2.

all tracks are recorded mono so No probs with str efx. I do use the rca outs into the sound card already. I must admit i haven't had the sample rate problem yet as everything is 44.1

Just one quikie HYD when I record from the 1680 to PC I get a hell of a lot of volume reduction as I record into the PC with a peak at -3db. and I can't get it back up to the same volume if I was to playback the dry recording from the 1680 is this normal.

one thing i noticed, is if you're using a stock soundcard, it's line in only runs at -10 db so i had to keep my master fader at -10 to keep from clipping.

AH HA the light comes on... I used the atenuate control on each track and kept the master fader at 0 (assuming this would allow for more dynamics in the music - or is that a misconception?? - if it is it's my brothers fault LOL)

So hat do you recomend ( I am waiting for a new sound card inca 88 that i found on ebay. Will this rectify some of the problem do you think.

It's good to find someone with the 1680 cause I have a whole heap of questions LOL :-]

yeah keep your master at -10 from now on, and put the channel faders at 0....in your case, if you're not wantin' to record directly on the computer, i'd get some kinda soundcard that has a SPDIF input...you can link the 1680 up with that....although you'll still hafta go through everything 2 tracks at a time.
