What's the difference? I'm guessing they create different sounds. Whats the benefit of one over the other? What about disadvantages?

I don't think there are disadvantages/advntages to one or the other. They produce different sounds which can either help a recording or hurt it, nothing more.

All condensers have a small amplifier in them to get them up to mic level as they use a transducer that developes very little current / voltage. A tube amp is generaly a little warmer and will naturally act as a bit of a compresser when driven hard per the tube's natural charisteric to amplfy in a non-linear fashion at the uppermost amplification range. As Bennis stated, it is a difference in sound, not a qualification of better. A lot of folks do like the tube mics for vox, as that is what has been typically used over the last 90 years or so for the most part.

So, do you think RnB and hip hop studios use tube condensors or regular condensors with a good preamp?

There are also very good tube preamps to think about. They also will give signal a warmer, slightly compressed sound. I'd think any combination would be used in good studios.

Now if I could only find a deal on those self-biased, gold-plated class-A tube microphone cables, I'd be all set =)

Don't laugh, Takamine is putting tubes in the preamps of their acoustic/electric guitars now! I wouldn't doubt if I started to see tube cables.

How about tube picks? hehehe. "why arent you playing?" "I'm letting my pick warm up".

hmmm.....I'm still somewhat confused. I guess I'd have to hear one in person to see if it'd be a good idea to upgrade my studio with a tube pre-amp/condensor.

If you are getting the job done now, you don't need one.

Lately people seem to have a very hard time seeing the difference between "need" and "want".

Let you product dictate what you "need" next. I find it funny how people seem to look for new things to buy instead of letting their studio, their final products and their increasing skill telling them when they need something...that said, I remember being there...jeezuz the room full of crap I used to have...

hay dan you're stealing my "need vs want" rant. LOL . I have alot of gear I don't use much or at all, most was bought because someone said "what do you mean you don't have that, you can't have agood recording with out one." or I fell for something with blinking lights and shinny gold what evers . On the pre-amp note, I have a few pre-amps , tub and non-tub and to be honest it's hard to tell the difference, the tube can be a bit noisier if it's driven hard, plus alot of companies now days have been on the tube kick , they'll slap a cheap tub into something and it'll be tube gear. the good tube gear will not be 100-200$ ,sorry (you may find a jewel among them ) most of the tube stuff out in 90% of HRC's price range isn't going to make a difference in sound ,if you compaire it to any other pre in the price range .

To try to answer the question related to HipHop, I consulted with two of my HipHop Guru's and their answer was; Tube pres on the west cost per the blended feel of HipHop out there and solid state on the east coast per the Up-Front vocals pushed in HipHop there.

Go figgure. Depends on where you are producing the stuff!
