Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro or Behringer 1204 Pro?

I decided to return my Yamaha MG 10/2 because I wanted a 4 Bus mixer for monitoring. A local store is selling the Mackie for $299, which seems like a good price. I would have to buy the Behringer online, but it is only $119 ($20 more than the Yamaha was).

Is the Mackie worth the extra money? I am especially interested in the quality of the mic preamps, as I will be doing a good bit of sax and woodwind recording.

The Mackie will definately be a more rugged unit if you are looking for that. I was just at a demonstration where the presenter pitched one across a room and then jupmed on it. All 280lbs of him. The mixer was unscaved.

In all honesty I could not give you a valuable A/B between the Behringer IMP pres and the Mackie XDR pres. This is subjective, however I would imagine the differences would be marginal. I have good reason to believe that the Mackie Onyx pres are truely a better pre-amp haveing been compared to reds etc. Obvoiusly the price increase is there as well.

I have to agree with walt(he is the man anyway) .It's hard to say who is better, I like both , mackies more top of the line mixers are "better" in my oppinion but you also pay a butt load. I have used behringer gear for a while now and i like the gear alright, i mainly use there mixers now, but i've had a lot of other products. Mackies are tough , and behringer are not as road worthy . The IMPs on the UB mixers work just fine . I'd say check em out if you cna side by side,if you can't, save some $$ get a new mic or a seprate mic pre amp (i use a seprate tube pre on vocals)

Thanks for the replies. As far as the ruggedness of the unit, I of course want the thing to be good quality and built to last, but I will only be using the mixer at home, so it need not necessarily be built to withstand the punishment Walt mentioned. That said, I don't want money to be the only factor in the decision.
