New Multitrack / Preamps & Recording Bands!!!

Hiya Folks

OK, I think I am gonna take a big leap here and buy me a Fostex V160 + a Behringer Ultragain Pro-8 Digital ADA8000.

This will give me 16 simultaneous recording channels with which, I hope to record bands properly using the multitracker, then bring it all back to my studio where I'll mix, edit, master then burn to disc. This should give me the best of both worlds I think i.e. record ANYWHERE but mix usin ma trusty PC.

My question. This method will only give me 10XLR inputs at once. If YOU were doing this, how would you:

1. Mic the drums (best sound v time ratio - this will be for demo's mainly)
2. Use the inputs overall (10 XLR's and 6 line levels)
3. Best capture a band live if they wanted that i.e. no "do the drums n bass first", then overdub geetars and vox. Obviously this is my heaven scenario - easy as hell. But for those awkward sods who want it all 100% live, how best to use 10XLR's for drums, gtrs, vox and the 6 line levels???

I know my bud Geetar Jim of this very site uses this rig up, with a mixer and his results are darn good. I am looking to get this done for bands as I say so I really wanna be able to know when I shell oot the bucks (nearly £1000!!!) I'll be able to pull it off!

If anyone has any other hardware they know of that would do the job NOW would be a good time to say!!

Finally, thanks in advance for all yer advices. I onyl ever used a rubbishy old 4 track tape recorder years ago for portable recording so its been a while as they say!!!

MAny Thanks, and also, thanks to Jim for his advices so far which have helped me towards the fostex...appreciated Jim!

All the best

Coco.

Hey coco!

The vf-160 is a quite capable machine indeed. I've had mine for a few years now and it churned out a few good recordings for me. Several live shows.

I posted a recording that I made with it a couple days ago(here, www.homerecordingconnecti...7083&frm=3) I captured the band just jamming pretty well using only 7 tracks. 1 for bass, 2 for the guitars, one for keyboard, and 3 for drums (stereo pair of Behringer B1s and a kick mic). You'll have to check it out if you want.

I'm sure with the extra preamps, you should pretty much have most situations covered. Best of luck with that, coco!

Good man Mike...

I'm checking it out now as we speak...gonny stream the hi-fi version! Just what I wanted to hear.

Between your good self and Geetar Jim, I'm sold! the VF160 will be mine!! Top top stuff. Added to the Behri as ye say, should be pleanty.

I also own a B1 - top mic's too.

Did you just fire all yer geetars straight into the fostex via the line out or did you mic em ??

Cheers again Mike - I appreciate the input.

All the best

Coco.

P.S. Sweet geetar solo ye have there my man! And, the makings of something quite cool I thinks.

Thanks coco!

The guitars were miced using the preamps from our Mackie mixer and ran to the Fostex's line-ins via the inserts from the Mackie. If your interested my geetar was panned left and Trey's panned right.

Yeah, I'm glad you like it and glad it helped ya. That's something we like to exercise frequently in the band: just using our ears and really listening to each other. Trying to predict where the music goes. Can be lots of fun too.

Aye..the panning was clear here Mike - I could hear both you guys jammin away very well.

Sounding quite cool...I remember in the good ole days when we jammed in ma old band back in 94/95 - we used a crappy old tape with a mic and just ran it in the middle of the room!!!

10 years on and we can now use cd quality multitrackers!! Mental huh!

Yep - I thinks, I may also need a wee mixer for the extra mic pre's - dunno - could get away with the Behri I think, but I will think on aboot this. I'd just like to be able to say "Yep - 16 tracks at once with whatever ye want"...

But, the machine is clearly MORE than capable. Is is yer band by the way - very cool stuff Mike.

Cheers...

Coco.

I do 3 piece bands live with my aardvark coco,

I have 6 mics on drums (kick, 2 overheads, midtom & high tom, Low tom, snare)

1 DI bass and 1 57 on bass mixed into 1 auxilary output on my mixer,

and two guitar mics (Sm 57, Rode NT. 1) Mixed in to another auxilary on my mixer.

This gives me a total of eight combined inputs, and a good sound!

Cheers CS

Sounds like a nice setup...for sure.

I'd need the 16 channels as I know many bands who are looking for recording and they are all 5 piece...with picky tastes!! Some wont even entertain an overdub....I may actually just tell them lot with nae overdubs to go do it themselves ;-) !!!

Anyways...cheers lads and keep em coming....
