Compression Causing Distortion?

When I hook up my compressor to an insert channel on the board it severely distorts the mic in a nasty way (which is cool for some things). I honestly know nothing about compressors so I don't know if it's a setting I'm using or what. I'm using a large diagram condensor mic on vocals recording with no isolation so I want the compressor to level out the vocals and prevent clipping, with respect to the small amount of bleed I get in the mic.

i'd like to know what model of compressor you're using so i can give a more detailed answer.....my first instinct is you're compressor is runnin' at -10db, and you're mixer has the signal at +4db, so to fix this i guess if there is no switch on the compressor, you could back off the trim on the mixer....my second guess would be if you have an input level knob on the compressor you can turn that down, third would be to turn the makeup gain (output level) down.....i checked your profile and i'm assuming you're talkin' about your yamaha compressor, but again' i don't know what model...

peace

It was as simple hitting that little switch on the back of the compressor. Thanks
