well i've done messed up i think....i've had these drum tracks and no other instruments due to logistics problems so i've cleaned them up and compressed them and eqed them and threw some reverb on 'em and i got a nice sound.......the thing is, i've been mixing them outta context!!!! i'm afraid all my labor will be scrapped when i get some instrument tracks....ah atleast i'll be able to keep my compressor settings! anyway is anyone out there fimillar with how drums sound soloed in a mix for modern rap/metal? i've got them pretty dry but i'm not sure they're punchy enough....i can e-mail a 30 second mp3 if anyone is interested in givin' me an opinion....

thanks

Hmm, I've never done the rap/metal thing, but I always start my mixes (straight hip hop) by adjusting the drums just how I like them, and trying to fit the other instruments around them, then going back in and making minor adjustments to drums. I don't know if I'd be any help, but you can email them to me, and I'll give a listen.

ok you've got mail....the drums are pretty dry and i don't want a huge Def Lepord sound, basically gooin' for the punch and snap of something like slipknot meets the naturnalness of dave matthews (that's what the drummer wants anyway) basically all i wanna know from you is if the kick and snare really cut through and hit hard, also i think the toms might be a bit loud and the floor tom sounds like cardboard!! i think it's cuz we used 3 mikes on the rack toms all the saame and ran outta clip on mics so we used a large diaphragm dynamic on the floor tom....anyway lemme know what you think...

hmmm, you used a whole lot of references I'm not familiar with (Dave Mathew, etc.). I like the drumming on this, kinda funky. Like I said, this is not a genre I'm all that familiar with, and I'm not sure how you have the drum tracks set up in your multitrack, but I think I'd mess with the eq on the snare some (either more highs or more mids, can't tell without having the eq control in front of me). Also, it seems like the snare could resonate a bit more for me, but I like the punchy snap that it has (maybe add some reverb and then compress to give it that expansive sound). Maybe the brass could be eqed to a higher spot in the spectrum and brought to the front a little bit. Toms sound pretty good to me, and kick could use a little more boost in the lows to give it some subwoofer oomph. Or maybe just make the kick louder. Of course it would definitely help to hear the other instruments too, to see how everything fits. Good luck mixing.

thanks coolo!

yeah i'm not thrilled about the snare sound either, i'm gonna tweek it some more...i've got two different subwoffers that i check my low end stuff with (one cheap consumer, and another expencive audiophile) and the kick is hittin' them pretty good, what were you listening through??? maybe it's something in the 200hz range that needs boosted.....anyway thanks for listening and i'll take your opinions into consideration, hopefully this sunday i'll have all of the music tracks on my computer!

thanks

yeah, I was listening on my computer speakers with a subwoofer. The kicks sound nice and punchy, but I feel like they are lacking maybe from 80hz down, but sound good from like 80-150hz. At least that's what I think I hear. Knowing my ears, you'll prolly respond back saying you have a huge boost at 60hz (and have me look stupid), but that's what it seems like to me.

nah i let a friend who's a pro engineer give it a listen and he said my kick needs work too...so back to work i go!! it's good to hear the same responce from 3 different people, i get a much better feel for where things are at....

thanks coolo
