Comments and Help on Track I recorded yesterday.

Last night I recorded a song for one of my friends. He raps, but it's NOT gangsta rap, so please be open minded to listening. I've only done a premix and was hoping if i can have some suggestions. I used a little hardware compression coming in, haven't used any software compression yet. I don't think it needs to be, but let me know if you think it does. On the verses, I made a copy and made a +/- stereo delay - and mixed it in 6db lower so it's just subtle. On the Hook, I had him rap a double. On the double, I did a +/- stereo delay and kept it at the same level so it's much louder. If I can have opinions on what you might do to mix it better, I'd appreciate it.
The other big problem I'm having is the ESSSSSSSS'ing.
I have some plugins that are supposed to De-Es, but I haven't used it yet. Do I highlight the whole vocal track and run the de-esser? Or do I only highlight the parts in the track that have the SSS sound.

I'd really appreciate any help/comments given as I'm new to recording and feedback, even bad feedback, will only get me better.

Oh, quick reference on my gear.
MXL v67g mic
behringer autocom compressor
behringer ub802 mixer
delta 66 sound card
adobe audition
I know my hardware is very entry level, but it's all I had budgeted.

I like it, this kid is pretty good (the vocalist).
For a street-level demo, this sounds good.

Yes, your equipment is entry level, but you've done pretty well with it for this cut. If your it sounds good to your ears, that's all that really matters.

Thanks for the comments, his name is Left E 0ne. He doesn't have a soundclick page yet. This is the first full song he's recorded. He's done a couple verses here and there before, but this is the first full one. I'm hoping to do more for him once I get more beats ready.

Any comments on the effects? I didn't know if I should use software compression as I used hardware compression coming in. I'm only mixing with computer speakers (Logitech), so I don't know how it really sounds I guess.

Vocals sound good compression wise to me. I can't really hear the stereo delay thing, but that's prolly a good thing. Just enough to give presence without being hella obvious. As far as a mix goes, I'd take the vocals down just a very little bit and maybe see if you can get the snare to poke through a little more.

As a song though, this is off the train track. Very nice. Did you make the beat? By the way, your gear is very servicable. You can real well with what you got. By the way, would it be cool if I play this track on my internet radio show?

Thanks for the feedback. I will give your suggestions a try. We got most of the beat from a friend who had leasing rights. I had to make some changes to it, because the mc wrote most of his verses first and didn't have the right bar format, so I edited it to make it fit.

Coolo, you are welcome to play it on your radio show. Can you let me know the internet station? Thanks a lot for commenting.

Vocalist did a great job. I respect all of the talent it took to create this song. You did excellent work with the gear you have. Although I have to make a comment. I get tired of hearing older songs "re-made" into hip hop tracks. I just know personally as a musician, I would be upset if someone took a song of mine and turned it into something else. In my opinion one of the great rewards of writing music, is coming up with something original and fresh. Just my two cents. I dont mean to offend anyone.

lol unforuantaly thats what alot of hip hoop is.It began with dj's and records and it carried on to what we hear today hip hop was built off sampling and still is but it shouldn't be that way..I mean the tools to produce our own music is available at fairly low cost, and it is a true pleasure creating something it's like magic.but Im going to try sampling just cause im curious, but I'll probably won't be doing much of it and if I do it won't be well known songs they will be "under the radar" type songs that people aren't familiar with that bring that piece of music to the masses and giving it the attention it never got.but then again I like the "magical" feeling and I don't want to pay people to make music people shall pay me to make music, seriously if that mc gets his foot in the door he will have to pay that band for using a piece of there work and heck not all bands are so nice about it and they might tell him to f off and there work is not for sale then where's his hit songs going to come from?

dtwizz, here is a link to my radio show.

It is focusses specifically on underground hip hop. The most major label thing I ever played was a new track by Common and Kanye on Interscope (I think). Everything else is off indie labels, or just folks doing it themselves. I get a lot of stuff off the internet. So much good music out there, that goes unheard.

As for old songs being "remade" into hip hop songs, I have to say much like Renegade said, that is a major part of how hip hop got started. Back in the day, the dj would play the break of a popular song (the instrumental breakdown) over and over and create a loop, and rappers would rap over this (as well as break dancers or b boys/girls dance to it). Sampling has evolved a lot since then, but is still a major part of the culture. Asking people to not sample is like asking them to stop making hip hop. If you don't want your song being used, just sue the hell out of whoever tries to use it. But honestly, though some sampling is over the top (some of Puffys bs comes to mind), much of it is subtle and arranges old sounds in new ways to make new music. In fact, most of the time you could even call it "original and fresh".
