Recording cards vs. Playback cards????

I know I've read somewhere an article or post describing the differences and advantages of a soundcard designed for recording vs. those designed for playback. Like the Deltas vs. Audigy SoundBlasters.
I have looked through the boards here but can't find it and I am trying to explain this to someone wanting to buy a new soundcard. Can someone give me some links supporting this technical argument?
Thanks

While I can't provide a link to anything, what I can provide is some concerptual arguments.

Cards meant for gaming and DVD playback type of work (like the SB's) generally have some of their cost put in to MIDI wave tables, environmental standards for games and other things like that. They are not well tuned for full-duplex use that recording requires, full-duplex being sound coming out and going in at the same time, and when they do do full-duplex it often slows the response time of the card so things start sounding like they have a delay due to the increased time it takes the card to process it.

ANother drawback is that due to budget constraints in the market, the SB type cards do not have nearly as hi quality of A/D/ and D/A converters. Which decreases the quality of the signal being passed thru it.

Recording cards put all their time and budget into high quality sound and low latency full-duplex performance...as compared to SB type cards which really have to cover a lot more ground for the more general purpose usage, they naturally have to sacrifice time, attention, budget or a little of each in other areas.

Hi Fretboard,

Here's a good link for you.

www.pcmus.com/choosecard.htm#whynot

Basically, it says that SB compatibles are rate-locked at 48KHz and if you're working at any other frequency the card has to resample, causing degradation.

Lots of good info on his pages.

Cheers,
Marty.
