okay i noticed rookys don't get alot of there posts responded too, however thats okay because that alone was enough to motivate me to do my own research and here is what i came up with:

MIC: www.mxlmics.com/condenser_mic/mxl2003/mxl2003.htm

-ran into-

PHANTOM POWER:
www.zzounds.com.../item--RLLPB223

-ran into-

MIXER:
www.kempke.com/depart/Sou...d%20VM3100.html

-ran into-

COMPRESSOR (thanks hue):
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

-ran into-

SOUNDCARD:
proaudiomusic.com/software/maya44_audiotrak.htm

-ran into-

COMPUTER:
NoteBook w/ Cool Edit Pro version.2

THERE! NOW WHAT! hehe. okay the only thing i'm alittle unsure about is if the compressor can connect to the sound card. other than that everything else can be connected with XLR cables. this should be my last post regarding equipment. so someone make me smile with comments and suggestions =]

I wouldnt say anyone doesnt have posts responded too - especially rookies - the VERY opposite in fact but there it is.

What does not get a post responded to quickly is double posting.

Compressor should really be used in an fx loop and not directly into the sound card tho this can be done. The mixer should really be headin into the s/card with the comp used in the mixer.

Cheers

Smoke, what's up. I have a question for you. I recall that you plan on making hip hop music. If so, do you plan on recording pretty much only vocals (or one instrument/line at a time), or are you expecting to record a whole band or several people at once?

If you are only doing one vocal/instrument at a time, you probably don't need a crazy mixer thing like the Roland VM3100, and that way you wouldn't need the extra phantom power only unit. You could get by with a mixer that has phantom power and mic pres in it, or you could choose just a standalone pre that also would have phantom power. The mic looks decent, and the soundcard and the compressor look like good picks.

You would connect the compressor to the soundcard with standard 1/4" cables. Hope that helps. If you want specific reccomendations for the mixer/and or mic pres, well I don't have a lot of experience with too many models, I just know I like what I have.

Enh, coco, I'll admit that my man Smoke hasn't gotten much response in previous posts. But that's how it goes sometimes.

If the forum moves too fast, which it has been lately, sometimes posts get pushed down too quickly, kinda the nature of the beast, has nothing to do with being a newbie or not.

I disagree with most every item in that list personally...whats with the phantom power box and some overpriced digital mixer? Why not get a lower-priced UB FX-Pro mixer from Behringer that has some great effects built in as well as phantom power built in? As well, AudioTrak cards, while good cards that have great drivers, on a hardware level are pretty much built for typical consumer use like SoundBlasters and their knockoffs, you'd be better off with a Delta 44 or something along those lines...

I agree. I don't see much point of getting a digital mixer. Yes, some of them have motorized faders, but they won't make your quality come out any better. I'd get a less expensive mixer that has the built in phantom power. Also, I think your better off getting a MIDI controller than to get a digital mixer.

well oh right then. MIC ---> compressor ------> mixer w/ preamp and phantom power -------> soundblaster ---------> note book. there now thats the formula. right?

Theres different ways of hooking it all up. The compressor somewhat depends if the mixer you get has "INS (inserts)" for the channel. If it does, then you'll want an insert cable for that. If not than I would:

mic --> mixer channel with phantom power
mixer "efx Send" --> compressor
compressor --> "efx return"
main outs of mixer ---> line-in soundcard

I think some people have the outputs from their soundcard go into the mixer and then the main outs on the mixer go back into line-in of the sound card.

I sold my old mixer and bought a Eurorack UB802. Its a much smaller mixer, but I didn't use my old mixer for other than 1 channel. So it was a waste.

Anyhow, I have my mic --> mixer. Main outs of mixer ---> compressor. Compressor outputs ---> line-in of soundcard. I read above its not best to do it this way, but for some reason, I got the best results doing it that way. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
