Going Solo!

Ok, I wrote this little piece today and was just doing a test recording when i came up with this idea.

It's basically an instrumental that i planned to have a lot of solo's on the top.

I'd like YOU to be invloved. I'd like to ideally have a spot for you to inlcude a solo using whatever you play ( guitar, keyboard, harp spoons - whatever)

If i get enough interst i would arrange and record the bed in relation to how many solo's there would be.

A HRC showcase if you will

So who's in?

oh yeah - here's the song

What a great idea! I listened to a little snippet on these cheapo iMac speakers, and it sounded really cool! Count me in! I'll throw a sloppy yet well thought-out guitar solo in somewhere.

Thanks for doing this!

One question: how long of a solo are you wanting? The whole clip posted, or just part of it?

Wow, this is great guys.

Ok, what i was thinking i would do is compile a list of those who wish to add a solo then re-arrange the sond the accomidate them.

So the solo length will depend on how many people are invloved.

What i will do is wait till Friday and then 'close applications' :)

After arranging the song! i'll post an MP3,tell you were you solo goes and then you shred away.

I will also arrange for a WAV file available for download.

How does that sound?

at the moment we have

Rigsby
guitar jim
whosyourdaddy (no worries with the bass)
Tadpui
olddog
Murphy

Can you guys confirm your in!?

And thanks everyone for your interest in this! should be great!

Here is an Mp3 for those who wish to DL the test bed.

umm wow, lemme see.....this is my first time composing a bass solo so i'd say drums (change of beat would be nice, but not necessary) and just a bit of keys or guitar comp. chords, then maybe a few measures of just hi-hats. then back into the rest of the music....not exactly like that but something along those lines would be nice....you make the call, and it is my job to put the finest bass line i can behind it.

It may be a good idea to try to get them tracked in the same order of play... may help things jive from one solo to the next ?...

Then again, brick wall after brick wall could be way cool too !

well what i was planning to do is just get the WAV file of the solo only (not the bed as well) and then just place it at the exact spot in the Cubase project.

I know it's finicky but ive done it with Solo's and other things before. it does work.

That way we can aceive the best possable quality.

Is everyone ok with that?

Hue, when it comes time for you to send your WAV i'll walk you through it! i'll get you to FTP it to a server so i can grab it from there.

Infact all of you can do the same if you wish.

An account will be setup for all of you to upload your bits.

I'm working on the bed tonight and with a few coffee's i might even nail it by tomorrow!.

I can't believe the response to this, thanks again to everyone. im quite excited by the whole thing.

Thermo, Got your email! that this awsome and definately going to be included! we have harp!!!

I'll let you know if i can work that in with the new version when its done or if i'll need you to re-record.

Are there any takers to do the final Master when its ready?

ok, good news everyone, The song will be ready tomorrow! depsite my hangover i've toiled all day!!!

Nothing beets copious amounts of redbull, coffee and vitamin B.

I've been having some very strong arguments with the stupid little red clip light in Cubase! Stupid thing's going spastic even though everything is quite low and never exceeding yellow!

Any way it sounds fine.

OK, here it is. I have had to speed it up a notch to try and make it an acceptable length :)

I will obviously re-mix after I receive everything so don’t be too concerned about how it sounds (though feel free to make suggestions)

The following are your respective Start and end times for your solo’s (in Min/Sec)

Guitar Jim 59–1:18
Olddog 1:27-1:46

Murphy 2:06-2:24
Tadpui 2:34-2:53

Wyd 3:13-3:31 (if you want you backing changed let me know)
Bleak 3:41-4:00

Hue 4:19-4:39
Coco 4:48-5:07

Rigsby 5:26-5:46
Jason 5:55-6:14

Thermo – you pretty much have free reign so just do your harp where ever you want over the whole song and I’ll edit in/out.

Now, due to the nature of Solo’s you don’t have to adhere preciously to the above times, it’s more of guideline to your ‘section’ of the tune.

If anyone would prefer the location of a WAV file (50MB) let me know.

When your ready to send the WAV or MP3 of your solo just let me know. I only want the solo back not with the tune. (It thinks that’s the best way – open to ideas though)

Are their any questions?

Cool beans bleak, let me know about the bit depth will you, and can you let me know where the wav is as soon as you can as i'm off to the library soon for some faster downloading and i'd like to get it then, i'm dial-up here.

dB, i can't record any higher than 44.1, when i switched to 24 bit from 16 i noticed the difference and figured the maths works better at 32, perhaps i'm wrong, either way i'm happy with the sound. I've not A/B'd the difference between 24 and 32 with this set-up. Don't know the soundcard without cracking open the mac, the whole thing was a gift from someone who upgraded, lovely gift, hours of joy.

Feb 04, 2005 10:03 am

you can't go past 44 but it'll do 32 bit?!?! thats weird...I am guessing regardless of the software setting, the sound card, if limited to 44.1 is also limited to 16 bit, though your software says 32 bit, it';s a 32-bit file of a 16-bit a/d conversion.

Ultra Magnus

No problem bleak, i'll dither to 16bit, that's probably the safest option.

Let me know where the wav is yeah?

So why do i hear a clear difference at 24bit? It'll also export and import at 48kHz and 96kHz. Maybe i just don't know how to change the sample rate, i'm using VST and the guide i bought when i got it doesn't explain how to change it, just says that usual recording in VST is 16-32bit, 44.1kHz. So do i need to change it on the card not the program?

Confused. Help my dB one kenobi, you're my only hope.

So why do i hear a clear difference at 24bit?

hmmm, yeah, that is a good point now, ain't it...my surprised reaction is only because it's odd to have a 24-bit card (or higher) limited to a 44.1 sample rate, it's an odd standard, typically 24-bits go to 96 or higher sample rates and 32 bit, I dunno, never messed with it, as even high-resolution audio isn't that high today...

However, I never have and never will claim proficiency with a mac either, so who knows.

That's a shame, but i'll wait for it, easier to line-up than an MP3, just as i don't have conversion software and VST won't take an MP3. I might not be able to get it til monday though, which means you may not have my wav til weds, is that cool?

67MB sounds about right, at 16 bit it's usually about 10mb a minute for a stereo wav.

Someone please educate me...why would we need anything other than an .mp3 file? We're just using it for a guide track to cut our solos. And if there is a reason, then shouldn't we all be using the same file format as a guide?

I get the part about us uploading our solos as a wav, but I don't get why some oare downloading the whole thing as a wav.

Like I said...please educate me!

So how are you guys lining this up to record along to? Do you have conversion software? Usually i have to play the MP3, record it to DAT and play that back out into VST, kind of time consuming. What are you guys doing?

Cool...the solo will be nailed tonight.

Nae worries...

Hey Jim, nope, there is no reason to work from a guide track using anything other than a decent quality MP3 (of 128MBPS will be fine or better) - it just dotn matter. The final solo will be exported as a wav anyway so tis only a guide track for playback. You'd only have issues if the MP3 was real lo-fi which its not.

Anyways..am off to record it now...break oot the Les Paul, Marshall, VAMP and ma beer....Cmooonnnn!

I've just polished off a couple bottles of Leinie's Big Butt Double Bock, and a twenty-second guitar solo.

Bleak, you can download my contribution here:

www.thecutaways.us/Hanger19-Guitar_Jim.wav

If you insert it at 0:54.354 it should match up exactly with the time frame that you so generously gave me!

Thanks again for doing this, I can't wait to hear the final result! If you have any questions or problems with my file, let me know!

I think i would prefer it dry or dryish!

I Don't really know to be honest but i get the feeling that effects and such would be better off done in the final mix.

But if that's not the case then i dont really mind.

looking forward to hearing it!

Already have guitar Jim's, i'm itchig to hear all the solo's in the mix. will be awsome

How's everyone else travelling?

sorry man i didnt get a keeper track out of recording tonight (that whole super bowl-related intoxication you know).

unfortunately, my temporary install of windows is on its last day before it makes me activate it after installing it. i won't be able to record again until my missing piece comes for my other computer, which will be a week or so.

I'm a total newby at home computer recording so i look forward to taking up a lot of your precious time here with my stupid newbie questions :) (just ask bleak, he gets em all the time). been playing guitar for about 18yrs and in the i.t industry for work so hopefully wont be a drain on you guys for too long. looking forward to seeing how this project turns out, kinda reminds me of that "hear'n'aid" thing all the metal guitarists produced yrs ago for africa and i'm sure if there were any proceeds from this, bleak would be more than happy to donate them to a worthy cause. anyhoo, should have my lead in by tonight.

OK my computer didn't turn back into a pumpkin today, so I tracked my solo today at lunch.

www.aarvid.com/tadpui/Waver%202_40.wav

there's some silence at the front, so if you line it up at 2:30 it should be OK. Feel free to fade out the ending to blend it in.

After listening to this back at work, I see that the mic picked up the closet door handle vibrating and I can hear it all the way through the track as a fuzzy sound on a lot of the notes. If I get time I'll redo it, but use this one in case I don't. Let me know if you need any modifications.

Here's mine too bleak, i couldn't convert the backing track file to wav so i recorded it to MD and played it into the mac, lined it up as best i could by ear and by wave and this should start at bar 129.3.1, just in case you have any troubles i made an MP3 of the same thing with the backing. Hope it fits okay...

www.rigsbysmith.net/hiddensounds/glock4bleak.wav

www.rigsbysmith.net/hiddensounds/19withglock.mp3

...i know you wanted all of our stuff pretty sharpish and i've got a lot on right now so it's just a 57 with my smaller glock sat on my desk (the larger one has a stand, but not this one), no padding underneath so there's some hit sound coming back from the tabletop but it sounds fine and dandy within the track as far as i could tell.

Jeez...don't i waffle on sometimes?

Hey Rigsby, there' an app called FreeRip that's a freeware utility that rips CD audio into .wav, .mp3 and .aiff files. The cool thing is that it also converts files between those 3 formats. It's handy, and its free!

OK...here we go:

I have done 2 versions as I wisny shure which one I liked best. Alas, 2 is probably better but 1 has more feel...dunno, I leave it to you Bleak - take yer pick. I done ye the solo by itself and a version pitche in with the backing track so ye can hear how it should sound...

Links:

Solo 1: www.badmartini.co.uk/CocoHangar19SoloVersion1.wav
Solo 1 With Backing: www.badmartini.co.uk/Coco...lipVersion1.wav

Solo 2: www.badmartini.co.uk/CocoHangar19SoloVersion2.wav
Solo 2 With Backing: www.badmartini.co.uk/Coco...lipVersion2.wav

They BOTH go in at exactly 4mins 48secs and 23 i.e. 4.48.23 ...

If ye dont like/want changed you just let me know.

Oh aye, final point - I missed the whole "record it dry" bit Im affraid so its been "Cocoised"..sorry bud..if ye are after a new one, I can do it - ye let me know and it'll be done.

Cheers bud

My gosh, I can't beleive I overlooked this thread! Am I too late for dibs?

Rigsby, that glockenspeil sounds hot! Very unique if I do say so myself.

I know is would be hard/impossible to do without face-to-face interaction, but it would be kind of neat if we came up with a solid, straight foward melody and we all harmonized with it. Maybe towards the end or something. Jeesh that would be sick sounding!

It is a very cool (and very open) set of nude vamps you arranged there. I may still play around abit just to for the sake of jammin' but I probably won't post it unless it's requested.

I do like to think I can offer a 'lil 'something' but really, I pretty much had to be dragged into computer-based recording, and now I can't imagine why I was hessitant... so, I'm still blind to many of it's facets .

Glad it worked wyd... one step closer ! wOOt !

well it gets to a point where the volume drops completely leaving a small gap. (it doesnt sound deliberate)

I'll use it anyway and when i release the mix you can decide to change it or not. I've no doubt others will want changes made to their solo's (mixing wise) so you will have to time for aother if you need it!

apart from that bit it sounds great!

Hey Bleak, lots of work in there, and a good mix. My glock is definately a little off time-wise, i think it's a little behind and the effect and/or EQ on it makes it sound a little thin IMO, what did you put on it? Hard to tell about the sound exactly as i downloaded the quicky version, but does sound a little on the thin side. Nice touch at the end, cuts off a little suddenly though, might be nice to have the glock repeat a couple more times and fade it out so it's more gradual to end. Overall, good work though.

Bleak,

WOW!! Everything I had thought it would be and MORE! You have done an incredible job putting this thing together...the organization, the arrangement, and the MIX! My kids didn't believe that this was a bunch of HRC-ers just jamming (which is, of course, the ultimate compliment!)

You fellas are some top-notch players and I am humbled to be sharing your seven minutes of fame.

Aha, that'll be it then bleak. Thing is i play with hard rubber xylophone beaters rather than wood or plastic ones to mute the sound slightly and bring out a warmer resonance, much prefer the sound, so taking out the brightening will be great thanks. I could apologise for being picky but hell, that's just the way i am :)

Cheers Coco,

Actually after some mucking around with yours i ended up leaving it as is. I used Ozone to master the whole thing so perhaps it has tweaked it a bit. Infact yours is the only one i didn't touch - yours and murphy's had the most effects already in the file.

and yes, using all the different types of everything (wav, effects, gear and so on) did prove challenging but SO worth it.

And the different styles and sounds really makes this thing unique!

yeah i'm diggin' it....if ya can get rid of some of the reverb on mine, it'd be nice, but if it's the verb that's on the whole song or whatever, don't worry about it.....this is way cool.

Hey guys, this sounds great. I am thinking I might like to add this to the compilation CD. It could be the final track to show the collaboration of the members as a whole.

This is really funky if I may say so. Kinda like Booker-T meets the 2000's head on. And guys, I gotta say those guitar chops is really funky. I was skeptical when I first read what you guys were up to. But I am now a believer for sure.

And I am truly lovin that B4 organ goin on in there. The fretless solo really gets it as well.

thanks Noize, yeah i was feelin' the B4 myself, i was also curious to the main songs bass line, did you play that yourself bleak? it sounds like a loop but i'm not sure, i tried playin' it and i couldn't keep up after about 30 seconds! haha anywho, i'm out

WYD - noted! Ozone does add a fair bit of Reverb but it doesnt help if the track has it as well :) i'll back it off. And NO, it's most definately not a loop, i have the blisters and twisted wrist to prove it :)

Noize - glad you liked it and i'm sure everyone is stoked about your consideration of including this on the CD!!!

Tell me though, What were you skeptical about in the begining? (just out of interst)

Glad you all are happey with the mix so far!!! must have got lucky :)

I've listened quite a few times now to the mix and I think mine might need to be a bit louder. Not much, it just sounds a little low compared to the rest probably because mine doesn't have as much treble to it. Then again it does help hide my timing error. LOL

We can take Old Dalekeith Road if you like :)

Well done Bleak. Sounds great.

I see what you mean about my phasing! OOOPS!!
I was way behind in gettin something ready so I didn't use any mixer, just straight into the soundcard via korg AX1000G but still a spot on mix.

Guys,

I have just seen that the 'test bed' for Hanger 19' made the charts!!!

As such i have uploaded the lower frequency MP3 of the current mix, in it's place

I could'nt upload the better version as i got an 'incorrect file type' error. I may have run out of space. But i'll delete my other songs if need be.

Excellent works again guys!!!

yeah my bass dosn't really have alotta punch the way a fender does, it's a pain in the arse to mix expecially when all you have is a dry naked track (my bad) i've had issues with this before...anyway i'm content with everything....

Hey Noize,

Yeh it's ready, I'll do another pre-master without Ozone or Har-bal and post the address to a WAV for you - Is that the best way for you?

If so, whats the maximum file size you can bare to download?
