Help with my crappy home studio

I have a P4
+Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
+Beringer Condensor Mic
+Shure Wind circle thingy
+Art Tube

Basically I'm using acid to record my raps, and the quality sounds like crap. Pure crap, when I bump it in my car, I can tell I did it on a computer. The sound is clear and all, but some how it won't sound like music I want to jump and rock my head into. Can anyone help me out a little? Please

my email is [email protected]
my aim is : findingkneemo

Well, I won't IM or email you, but I'll leave a comment here. Odds are the problem starts with the sub-standard sound card. Good for gaming and DVD watching, but not recording.

Beyond that, you kinda need to say what instruments you are recording and how you are trying to record them, such as mic placement and other stuff.

There's so much to what you're asking, can you break it down a little so it feels a bit more managable to answer?

"The sound is clear and all, but some how it won't sound like music I want to jump and rock my head into."

Because this is such a broad question, I will ask this with no implied disrespect.

Is the music good, written well, and produced well? If a song is good enough, people will listen and get ther body into it as you described even though it was done on a computer at home. (I know, as I have)

Then there is the problem of sounding bad due to lack of experience and sub par equipment.

Remember, the pro don't use Soundbaster cards so it is a little unfair to compair yourself to anything on a major label CD.

More info is needed to truely help.

Also, it is not mentioned what speakers you mix on...that could be a problem factor as well.

i'd chalk it up to your mixing and mastering...i remember thinking the same thing about 3 years ago, i was like "ok i like what i'm writing, but it sounds thin and completely unpolished and unprofessional" that started my quest for good sound, and has been a never-ending process (althought i gotta admit, i'm gettin' pretty handy with the faders these days)....basically you're at a crossroads, do you want to have control and do everything yourself and spend a few years and a few thousand bucks learning how to record, or do you wanna focus more on yourself as an artist? i'm a DIY person, and do not care for Major record lables at all, so here i am. but if you're lookin' to get signed and all, then focus more on your art, and go to a studio and cut some tracks.

you don't know what you'er talking about man. my home boy has a sound blaster, and that niggas songs are off the chain man. go to www.coop-show.com and click on my music. that niggas songs sound like studio time. anyways if ya'll don't know what you're talking about, stop trying to help me.

one question though, you know whne i have my headphones on to start rapping throughu the mic, some how the sound seeps out of my headphones, into the mic, and becomes a part of the recording, how can i stop this. thanks, peace

OK, well, considering we are trying to help, I suggest you loose the attitude whether or not you agree with the opinion. Fact is whether you like it or not, SB's are inferior sound cards, and it takes extra measures to get it to sound decent in many occassions.

If your headphones leak then answer is to get headphones that are better isolated. Or don't turn them up as loud when you use them (if possible).

I don't care what your home boy has, SB's ARE NOT meant for recording, tho it can be done, and is on many occassions, life is a lot easier for people with better cards. And yes, I do know w3hat I am talking about and really don't appreciate being told I don't when I am trying to help someone.

Let me ask you this? Do you compress at all when recording your vocals? Or anything else? Compression alone can do a lot for adding some power to the recording by giving you a smoother signal to work with in the first place.

Dude, chill out, I mean it. we don't accept hostile attitudes and sure as hell ain't gonna take yours. If you are asking for help, tone it down and act like an adult or take it elsewhere.

I'm not BSin' ya, I'm trying to help. Do you compress? if not I suggest you try compression, especially with rap. Also, there are TONS of headphones to choose from, the bottom line is you need headphones with more pad around them to keep sound from leaking out, if you like the cans ya got, you'll need to rap something around them to keep it from leaking out...

What's with the friggin attitude, dude? People are trying to friggin help!

Oh, and in addition to the admin, this is MY site, if you don't like it, go somehwere else, we don't need an attitude like yours around here.

If you're gonna act like a brat, no figure it out yourself. I don't help people that come in here and EXPECT everybody to tell you what you want to hear and show no appreication for it.

Take the attitude somewhere else. I have given you valid opinions based on what I know, that's it, I'm done with you.

I just hate it when people just wanna come in a raise hell. It was a good question from a newbie, in which had a lot of great advice, but just HAD to get nasty...I dunno, it's just disappointing.

if people want to act like that, that's fine, I just wish they'd either take it somewhere else, or lighten up and try and fit in when asked. Coulda been some great conversation and cool info being shared walking them thru the beginnings of the studio.
