I have an AKG D112 & a SM57.

I need to know what to consider for aerials and toms if anybody has any suggestions. Thanks

(notice i didn't ask which ones are "the best")

Senheiser 604's, (if I remember right) are nice units for toms. They sell in three packs at a slight discount from buying one at a time. Overheads are quite contested. You should be able to get quite a few ideas from folks. I like MXL 603 small condensers for overheads. They are a little 'crisp' with a high end boost, but I have grown used to that. They offer me a little extra high end without boosting eq if I need it and I can cut eq (which I prefer) if necessary. On snare I use two mics. An Oktava M012 on top and a real old peavey spot condenser on bottom. I sometimes use a Rode NT3 on high hat if there is a lot of delicate action to capture. It is a supercartioid and offers a little extra isolation for the rest of the kit.

These are just ideas per what I often use. I am sure there are better more expensive mics that can be used for most every application. There are also a lot less quality mics. So, call it 'middle of the road' approach.

Thanks for the ideas. I was seriously thinking about the E604s already but will definitely check out the MXL 603s now.
