I gotta say something

Over the last many weeks/months I have been participating in some other recording forums, trying to get to know people and become part of the communities, or just watching, to see what they have, what makes them tick, etc...kinda, shoppin' the competition so to speak.

What I have generally found is that there is a lot of very hostile, insulting and condesending people out in cyberspace, and that anyone can be a toughguy behind a keyboard. It's been very disillusioning really. And I am not talking about people coming after me personally (though sometimes it was) but after anyone.

I now understand why new people her often come in with their armour on and an aggresive attitude...it's likely a learned defense if they have been at some of these others.

I just wanna take a minute to say, while HRC is far from the biggest forum out there, we are without a doubt, of all I have visited, the most helpful, welcoming and friendly forums out there. And this is not from me or the rest of the staff policing the joint, as HRC needs little policing, it's from you folks, the HRC membership, that is such a good bunch.

We have had moments of serious tension, hell, I have been the cause of it at times, but I think in the last year we have had very little disciplinary problems and very few arguments, just good, fun chatter and people making a lot of great music.

Keep rockin' guys, I have, in the last weeks, really learned to appreciate what we have here at a new level...it's really quite cool. If we keep this attitude, there is nothing stopping the growth and continued success of this community...who knows what we could accomplish as a group...the sky is the limit.

i for one enjoy coming here mainly because of the polite attitudes ,and also the people here try to help you out without trying to make you feel stupid ,after all nobody has all the answers or we wouldn't be here in the first place.i have noticed in certain other forums that people do have a negative attitude when asked for help a degree of high and mightyness displays, and i think the difference is that a good % of us here are adults and the ones who aren't,are mature enough not to trash others within the forum .respect is a very simple form of kindness and there seems to be plenty here.glad to be a part of it!

Agreed 200% dB..thats why this is pretty much the only site I ever use these days for forums. I use no others.

I did check out that John Sayers guys website for studio building and that is an awesome resoruce for technical info (but, not as friendly as here). However, its a niche i.e. purely building a studio tho, John himself seems like a cool guy...

But, I conclude without a shadow of a doubt there is NOWHERE Like this place on the web...for sure. Due to the actual truth and relationships goin on here. Its like, real folk, just chattin aboot music, stuff we all like withoot feeling out of place or superior/inferior to anyone.

I have improved a lot over the last year and its all down to this site. That, and the help of the folks on here...awesome. I tried for months to fidn something like this and I still never found anything a year on (I dont even bother checkin and havent since month 1!!!!!).

So - good on ye all as I said in another post. Its a top place, resource and all that goes with it.

BUT....

Bleak dude, I love this place but I gotta say, I still need my wife - I cannot iron my clothes to save myself and when I last checked, nobody here would do it!!!! hehehehe....

All the best to ye all...long LONG may it continue.

Coco.

db, i have to say that maybe it is your influence, and noize and flame and all the mods and stuff, more than you give yourselves credit for.

i think i arrived here with a bit of a hostile attitude. for like 2 posts. i had been conditioned by all the arrogance on other forums to be primed to defend myself. then i saw how HRC really worked. i was like 'oh, a 'nice' board. cool!'

i think people have many sides to them. even the people on the aggressive boards, a lot of them are just acting that way because it's a viscious cycle and they think thats how they must act. all it takes, i think, in general, to keep a nice place is the influence of a group of mods that is taken seriously and respected and exerts thier influence whenever needed. people just need to know they're not going to be attacked, that they dont have to worry about that, and that seems to shut down the 'strike first' impulse. when bad behavior will not be rewarded with attention, people lose interest in acting that way.

the music theory forum i go to walks the line. www.ibreathemusic.com is basically a nice place, for the same reasons: the mods nudge the discourse toward civility and the visitors pick up on that and realize they've found some kind of safe haven on the net.

don't forget alotta stuff on any board can be misinturpreted (sp?)...it's hard to convey sarcasm and implied emotion on the net....i've posted a few things that got taked totaly a different way than what i ment before. it's not hard....99% of all feuds are due to some sort of communication breakdown, or misunderstanding.

Have to agree with everyone. This is the coolest board, and I've been to many of them. You guys have been very helpful. On that note, I'm going to keep coming back.

I am a little supprised that this comes as such an 'epifony' there dB, but that fits in with the persona of this site. Very natural and unasuming.

I preceive it much like a company. A company will take on a personality per the people involved particulary the management. To fit in and work well within that company one must have or assume a like thought process.

Here the precepts are spelled out pretty clearly and 'we' (now there is a statement of belonging) have gathred a lot of like members who can put ego aside and function with a relitively high sense of wanting to contribute in adverse to be rewarded.

What I appreciate most is the synergy that is developed here. The ability of the bulk of members to 'agree to disagree' and more important appreciate that we are all not like minded and consequently take advantage of those differences. That is the highest form of learning environment one can achieve.

I think for many of us it starts with simple rules of the forum and evolves to a sincere appreciation of the environment and members. For the achievements acomplished by so many here, I would endevor to say someone could write a book on the essence of the development of this community and sell it to companies as a model. Now having said that, I'm pretty sure that ego's would get in the way and the book would probably go unappreciated.

Just glad it's working here!

It's very strange that I can happily post here and not worry about making a complete tit of myself. It is almost that I am blissfully unaware that what I write is here for the whole world to read

I stumbled onto this website back in May '04 and never felt the need to go anywhere else. It's really helped me with a number of issues. I remember the first thing I read from this site was one of the tutorials on EQing in a mix and I've been hooked ever since. So much I became a PRO member last week. Thanks for everything HRC.

Hey Bleak, Im with ya on that one. I spend more time at HRC then I do with my wife. Now the boys that is another story. They come in here and share some of the funny things that go on, as well as the tons of good music coming out of HRC as well these days.

And dsd, you are very right about being blissfully unaware. I think we all write things here without even thinking about the fact that the entire world is watching, or reading. I attribute that to the comfort level this site brings with it. I know being here is part of being home for me. Arriving home from a boy scout outing this weekend and the first thing I do is pop up my email and head over here to good old HRC.

Its like curling up with a good book for me.
