Well, I've been doing nothing all day but playing with the setup on my new computer...which includes a Delta 44 sound card. Here's a quickie pop song that I threw together to see what the sonic possibilities are.

At first I just wrote it for the express purposes of demo-ing the equipment, but the more I listen to it, the catchier it gets. General thoughts (or specific ones) on the song, the mix, the quality, etc., are appreciated.

I love this kind of stuff. Great melody and guitar riff.

Thoughts-- Where's the Bass? Don't really care for the Snare tone myself. It's little too thin for my taste. Thats about all the critique I can offer on the mix.

THe song could use a break in it. (I'm a big fan of them as one can tell by my tunes here)

LOTS of potential though man. Good job.

Yeah, I've been debating about adding a break. I just need to get the chord sequence right for it. :)

There's actually a bass guitar in there, but it's mostly obscured. That's one of the initial problems I'm having with this sound card...whereas on the old "record it through the internal card" system, the bass was appropriately muddy, now it's so CLEAR! And I realized that I'm not a very good bass player. So I need to work on that.

Snare tone does need some tweaking. I may just change the drum module altogether.

This will probably end up getting totally re-recorded. But I'm glad you liked it!

Sweet, I do like the snare myself. It fits well with the guitar and vocals. I agree the bass could maybe be punched up just a tiny bit. Not a lot though as it might detract from the guitar. Over all the rest of the mix sounds great. And the new sound card shure seems to have made a differance in the sound youa re getting.

Does the name John Hiatt ring any bells? I love the groove, I love the vocals, but I'd like some harmony on the chorus. I too like the sond of the snare, and would like to hear more bass.

Great song!

Keep up the good work!

Noize, it definitely is making a difference...so much so that my dad asked me why all the instruments sound so distinct from one another on these new songs. :)

jim, I'll be honest...I don't know much of John Hiatt's stuff, although I do have a distinct memory of seeing him playing "Perfectly Good Guitar". And ironically, he spent some formative years in Indiana, which is where I'm from and where I currently live, so that's a plus. I'll have to investigate more.

You're right, some harmony on the chorus would be ideal. Now I just need to find some harmony singers that will sing it for free. :)

Thanks for the comments, and I'll have a re-recorded version done sometime before the end of the month...I think.

Most of what I have is purely a matter of taste. Like your dad said already, you have the basics (and that is a lot) of clear, clean sound with all of the 'voices' (instruments/vox/etc.). I do like the snare, guitar, and vox. Bass up a little?..maybe, I'd have to hear it that way.

Jim, you're hired! :)

Actually, that's a neat idea. How do we go about doing this...do I email you an mp3 or something? Or do you have a Gmail account that you can use for larger files?

I'll download your mp3 and use it for a guide track. I'll see what I can come up with, and then I'll post the .wav files on my Cutaways website and you can grab them from there.

Give me about a week or so...

Actually, hold off on that for a bit. I'm gonna recut the whole thing anyway, since I need to get my own vocal a bit more in tune (and perhaps add a couple sections so that the thing goes longer than two minutes). I'll post the updated version whenever I finish it (hopefully this week sometime), and I'll shoot you an email or something.

Thanks, though! This should be cool - I've never done a collab before.

Oh...if you could e-mail the words and the chords it would be very helpful!

OK...I'll wait until you re-work it. But I did download the .mp3 so I can start working on some ideas.
