Hey guys, I can dream my Behringers block diagram by now, I have searched the site for a solution to my problem, but I guess what I want is not possible... or I'm stupid. So I decided to annoy you with it! Please take a sec to check it out and tell me what to do, so I can go on with my life...

This is my set up:

Pc output into Tape In, so I can hear the beat from the pc through Control Room & Phones.
Tape Out goes into the pc input so the sound from the mic (in Mono Input Channel 1) can be recorded in the pc.
Amplifier is connected to Control Room Out. When Tape to Mix button is down and the Tape to Control Room button is up, I can play all (vocals + beat) over my monitor speakers and through the phones.
When Tape to Mix button is up, and the Tape to Control Room button is pressed down I can hear the beat from pc over the phones and record vocals in the pc. There is only one flaw: I don't get the vocals over the phones!

it seems NOT possible to get the sound of the microphone ánd the sound of the beat over the phones and ONLY record the vocals.

Is this true?

And if there is a way to get beat + vocals over the phones while only recording vocals, what should I adjust in my set-up?

Thanks!

what software and sound card are you using?

In my setup, my sound card allows me to choose what I want the sound card's outputs to play. I select "wav out" so that it outputs what my PC's output is. I then run this signal to my speakers. Now, I hear everything going on in my PC...and since I have ASIO drivers, the latency is negligable.

So, when I record a track, after I arm the track, my software allows me to click a button on the track that monitors it's input. So, when I record, I can hear everything plus what I'm recording.

I got a Waveterminal 192X and I'm recording in Cool Edit.

Sorry, I was editing my post when you replied. I'll repeat myself some here, but I wanted to bump the thread so that you'd know that I replied...

I'd suggest this:
-Assign 2 of the sound card outs to carry the "wav out" signal from your PC. This would be done in your sound card's control panel. If you can't do this, at least set Cool Edit Pro to output to a couple of the sound card's outs. Do this in the Devices dialog box in CEP. Select whichever pair of outs it will allow you to select (looks like you have 8 outs on that card). Select an ASIO out if you can, to minimize latency.

- Plug those 2 outs to your monitors. I guess for you, this would mean plug these 2 outs into your tape ins on your mixer. Now you'll hear everything going on in your PC thru your phones ( if you were able to do the "wav out" thing). Or, at least you'll hear everything going on in CEP (if you set CEP to output to this pair of outs).

- I haven't used Cool Edit for a while, so I can't really remember how to set it up to monitor your incoming signal while recording it. Find out how to do that, and then I think you'll be set! It should be either a button on the track itself in the track view, or an option under one of the menus in the menu bar. Sorry I can't be more specific on this part, but I can't find any screenshots on the web to help out.

If you are using the Waveterminal 192X the simplest solution would be to not even have the mix output going to the mixer. If cooledit will let you select what outputs from the WT192 it can use simply select outputs 7/8 and have them go straight to the amp. This will allow you to not use the tape i/o section of the mixer as that is really not the best option.

I guess Tadpui cover the major part of it so this should get ya running without having to switch things around all the time.
