PC Fan Noise

For some reason my PC has ridiculous fan noise. Is there a fool-proof method (other than installing some kind of switch...) of reducing the noise/isolating the fan from the chassis? I ca get the fan to quiet temporarily by "tweaking" the case - applying pressure to one or more corners, so I assume the noise is caused by the fan's mounting. Help!

Perhaps investing in a better cooling system. There are some awesome ones out there, I am looking into some myself.

I'd suggest small rubber washers, or something of the kind. Install them under the fan mounting points. Be aware though, that there's a fan in the power supply, and sometimes inside the case somewhere for extra cooling. Also, there's the hard drive that may be making lotsa noise, as well as the CD drive.

I disconnected the case fan in my DAW, then moved the CPU into the next room via cables. It wasn't badly noisy, but you could hear it when recording with a condensor mic, so it had to go!

Lost for words with all to say.

Maybe checking to see if the fan screws are nice and tight? Clean the fan itself and maybe some WD40 on it? Worth a shot.

"Cooling System", dB-Wan? Wassat? Intrigued.

Thanks pjk, that's probably the kiddie - i.e. the washers. It's definitely the case fan. The hard drive is pretty quiet, and the power supply fan is barely audible. I might have to relocate the CPU under my desk and put a baffle up. New PC, new house, have barely fired up my "studio", so there's kinks to be worked out all round. Your point about condensers and fans is well taken....

There are various cooling systems that are like little air conditioners for your computer, one little fan and a device that super cools the air that is being pushed around your system, I am seriously considering one myself, actually, plan to stop at the store over the weekend to pick on up perhaps.

The downside is my rackmount case is somewhat limiting in size.

You could also consider watercooling. It's a bit tricky, but there are kits that are affordable and give good results. You do need to be a bit handy to install it though, but it's doable.

I used a kit for the fans in my newer PC and am going to be doing the same to my old one as well. They are from Antec www.antec-inc.com
and work great. It is really just a silicone based washer and gasket set. You can get a whole kit that will do 2 or 3 fans and the power supply for $17.99. I found it well worth it after I discovered the fan on the side of my newer case was a bit noisey from vibration, not the fan spinning.

And hard drives can make a lot of noise as well so look into isolating them. I acutally stretched out the frame my main drive sits in and gasketed it and that made a differance as well.

All good advice. You may also look into applying some case sound dampening materials. Don't worry if that makes no sense. Go to you local computer shop and ask if they carry anything to quiet the case down. This may be all you need.

Here is a link to a product to more clearly explain what I mean.

Holy cow, what a difference those Antec double-ballbearing fans make !

Night and day from the one I just replaced .

They also make one with a triple-speed switch to it, but didn't have one in stock for the 120mm size, so I crossed my fingers with this one, and am quite pleased . I can only imagine that the "Tri-Cool" is even quieter at a lower setting .

Thoroughly impressed !
