The future setup...

At this current point in time, I think I have narrowed down all the stuff I need and what order I need to purchase it in. I am looking for opinions.. IE " no, you should purchase ___ before the ___.." exc.

1. Sound card - M-Audio Delta 410

2. Mixer - Behringer UB2222FX-Pro

3. Drum mics - Nady DMK-5 Kit

4. Compressor - Alesis 3630

All of this is basically just to get me started. I am sure I will find things in that setup that arent what I want, but I can swap them out later.

why sold on the 410? Do you need 8 analog outs or something?

No... as far as I know, I only need 2 outs. I have spent a lot of time reading reviews on a few different cards, and of all of the cards for under $100, That one seems to be the best. I am assuming though that you have a different opinion? I am all ears. Or rather, eyes.

I had no idea it was that cheap...RCA plugs are typically noisier than other types, but wow, yeah, the price is nice...

Crap... that was a major oversight on my part... I need 1/4" inputs in order to use the UB222FX without introducing noise into the mix, dont I? Back to the drawing board.. any recommendations? Under $100.

Perhaps the E-mu 0404? that looks like what I need.

lol, thanks. That is why I like this forum better than any other that I go on. Positive attitudes toward people who ask a lot of questions are a rarity anywhere else. Thank you yet again, Dan.

Yeah, we here that a lot around here...it seems as though many people have forgotten that they were once newbies too...hell, I still feel like a newbie many days...

Glad to help, now just quit going to those other damn forums unless you are telling people to come here ;-)

Haha.. Not related forums. This is the one and only home recrding forum I am ever on. The other forum I am on a lot is 300zxclub. I am into modifying cars... that has been a passion of mine ever since I got my license. You wouldnt believe the attitude problems floating around in there.

Back on subject though, Other than my sudden change in sound cards, How does the rest of the list look? Think the DMK5s will be good enough to get a leg in the door until I can figure out what I am after, sound wise, with the drums? I took your advice and dumped the 7 mic idea. I know the 5 piece kit are all dynamic mics, but due to the incredibly loud volume of the ride, I have no doubt that it will bleed through enough to be audible. When using the term "bleed through", I am assuming of course, that this means the sound comes through on the wrong track while recording, and is not associated with any other unwanted noise such as distortion. opinions on that? Haha.. now I have to learn about drum mics.

Yeah, other than the card I think you are on the right track.

other than the card? What do you suggest then? I know you mentioned the Delta 66 once, so I went in search of it. I came back empty handed.

OK, I meant other than the original card...the EMU sounds like it mightbe a good bet, any other card I would suggest would be up in the $150+ category. Juli@ and Audiophile come to mind. Audiophile is $100 too, it has RCA's as well, but I have used it, it's a great card. service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

The Juli@ is a bit more, but it has 1/4" option, it can do RCA or 1/4"...plus has optical outs too, thats the card I use, personally.

Do you have any links to the Juli@? It appears that MF does not sell them.

esi-pro.com/viewProduct.php?pid=43&page=1

Yeah, I have asked MF many times to sell them but they keep ignoring me. Which is stupid cuz they sell other products by the same company...

I'll tell ya somethin', man, I use the Juli@ myself, I had the Audiophile 2496, Juli@ came in with 1/2 the latecy under ASIO about 1/10 the latency under WDM plus the RCA vs 1/4" choice plus Optical outputs for 5.1 surround mixing...hell, no brainer dude, it's an awesome card. hook it up with your 2222 it'll rock, I have the 1622 and it works great.

Oh, and it comes with some cool software bundled along too...

What software is included? Should I hold off on Sonar 4?

Another big selling point for me was the 192 KHZ recording capability. I dont exactly NEED that much... but it is definitly good to have more than you need... that way you will never be dissapointed. The fact that you use that card yourself and still recommend it is a strong seller in my opinion. That says a lot for the quality of the card.

As I recall a lite version of Ableton Live comes with it as well as various plugins and all kinds of other stuff, I forget exactly what...

TRS is the 'correct' name for 1/4" jacks, right? Something just occoured to me. If I am right, then the inputs would be balanced 1/4". However, arent the behringer's outputs unbalanced?

TRS is balanced 1/4" (tip, ring, sleeve)
TS is unbalanced (tip, sleeve)

Regarding the mixer, the sub groups are unbalanced, so yes, you will have an unbalanced signal unless you make the subgroup your main outs and the main outs your subgroup going to the card inputs.

Crap, you lost me again. Make my main outs my subgroup?

yes, jsut make the main outs go to your sound card inputs and the subgroup outs go to your speakers...

never mind, just do it the way you were planning, you on't even know the difference anyway.
