Well, I come home last evening to a letter from my phone company/ISP. w00t, for the first time ever in history of communications as I know it, they have taken it upon themselves to up my DSL service to 512k up and down with no charge to me ever, they just increased my basic service level. Add to that the fact they have always given me a static IP, which is odd in itself, cable companies charge a lot of money for that, and I am actually happy with my phone company...what, did I say that?!

Yeah, Cable is great sometimes, Noize2u also has a great connection, 3MB up and down. But he (and any other cable subscriber I know) also has many more problems, outages, or bandwidth choking at times of the day when everybody is on (like right after dinner time)...whereas I have a steady up and down rarely affected by outside issues...I'll take consistency every time.

Wow dB, that is really amazing!

I'm affraid I have little good to say about the 'telephone company' however that is defined. The old 'twisted pair, copper' practices are extreamly poor. I worked for GTE right out of college for three years. What a mess. They send their 'techs' to pole climing school and teach them how to read wire color codes and connect two wires together. End of technical knowledge. SBC, Itty, Bitty, babby, and Dingy Bell are worse. I used to interface with their techs when I worked for IBM. One came out with a meter and told me he though the circuit might be bad because the needle of his meter was in the "red" zone and he knew that red is usually bad. His supervisor told him to take the meter with him although he had never seen one before. Here at the house I have a ground pedistal that was ran over some time prior to my moving in. My phone was static central when it could draw dial tone. Answer to my repair request; It is inside, there will be a charge. I put a fertilizer bag over the pedistal to keep out some moisture and switched to broadband hetrodyned service. The bag is still out there five years later. I have received at least 100 calls 'please come back to us!', 'we have great rates'. Reply; Fix what's under the bag first and I will give it due consideration. Their commercial service is the biggest nightmare. When I moved my business I didn't get a call for six months! Numbers transposed, changed, couldn't get service connected, on and on. Now they want to sue me because I closed the business and I have a remainder of a contract to take care of.

Man, if I ever even thought of providing that poor of customer service I would be axed in a heart beat in any ohter industry I have worked in. Unbelievable.

Yeah, my previous experience with phone companies is less than acceptible, but, they don't really have a very competitive marketplace, until just recently with thing like VoIP and such stuff...it'll get better, it has to...

Well...I have 256k/512k...best I can get here but it sure as hell beats on the old 56k dial up I had til Feb this year!!

Cheers

P.S. DB - Nice one. That sounds REAL sweet. 3MB tho - think Noize tops it with that for the fastest connection EVER!!!

The cable competition is really forcing all these ISP's to sweeten their DSL plans. I started off with up to 6mbps Down, 384kbps up, w/5 IP's @ $200/mo. Then with no competition they capped it at 1.5mbps 384kbps. Now that the cable company is cutting into their business they've changed to 3mbps down and up to 416kbps up and the price has dropped to $52/mo and I still have my static IP's though I dropped to 2 of them. Capitalism is great when it works. LOL

Yep, I love it. And I dont really ever get clogged other then from the other end. When I first hooked up it slowed on occasion but now I am the only line connected straight to the main pipe, and there will never be another hooked on my post so I feel lucky for that. The line from the main is less then 30 feet and then its another 8 feet to my modem with only one jump connection in there. The only time I suffer any bandwidth loss is when my youngest is playing WarCraft online, and then its only when he's logged into one certain server.

What is really nice is I can upload and download an entire CD project in less time then it used to take me to up or down a single track on the old DSL here. Now I crave more speed and it sound like they are getting ready to up it again and as in OD case give me a better price as well. Time will tell, I'm not holdin my breath on that one.
