no sound thru line in when recording

i have 2 separate systems, and this is happening on both. when i connect through the mic in, i get noisy, bassy sound when recording in cool edit or vegas. when i connect through the line in, i hear the sound as if the computer is a monitor, but nothing registers in the program, nor is it recorded. i checked everything i can think of, and it seems to be a program specific error instead of a windows error since i do get sound through the cards. one is a sound blaster audigy, and the other is a ess allegro. any ideas?

welcome to HRC.

While this may be just hitting it with my simple stick...it sounds like the tracks are not being assigned to the properly inputs.

That said, the ESS chip will be worthless for your task anyway, the audigy, while not the best, will work...I'd just concentrate on getting the audigy system to work first.

I would try using WDM as it is a much better performing driver set.

When you're in cool edit, have you done like db said and selected which input to record from? Do you know what I'm talking 'bout?
