Recording Tricks

Hey guys, does anybody have any recording tricks or secrets they would like to share? The trick I use all the time is wth recording bass. Since my bass amp is toast, I've had to rely on DI recording. Unfortunatly as most of you know, you lose the sudtle pick and finger nuances vs recording a mic'd amp. To overcome this I record my bass via DI and also with a large diaphragm condenser pointed at the 15th or 16th fret. I add just enough of the picking noise to the direct track to flavour. Works like a charm and adds life to my bass tracks.

I like to record with a big bra full of accoustic foam straped to my head over my headphones. Keeps out unwanted noise and keeps away musicians that want to play with knobs!

the only way I would try that is if the bra was also coated in aluminum foil. that way, the thought police couldn't monitor my mental plans for exposing the international conspiracy between NASA and Better Homes and Gardens to start growing house plants in space, where its inexplicably much cheaper and then they're not gonna pass the savings down to us!!!1!11 The humanity!

...oh, recording tricks...

On backing vocals, to distinguish them from the lead vocals, I like to compress the heck out of them, roll off a little high end, and add a little more reverb than I would for lead vocals. then, be sure to pan them in the stereo field so that they come from a different place than the lead vocals. This way, they don't compete with the lead vocals and confuse the listener as to which is the lead and which is the background.

Can't afford a compressor/gate with a side chain to an eq, or a stand alone d'esser to get rid of those splosives?

Get out a pencil and some tape, place the pencil across the mic where you'd be singing into it, tape it on, and position it so it's adjacent to your nose (up and down)... Works best with flat top SM57's and the like.
