Laptop Home Studio Solutions

Hi, I wanted to get the advice of those who have done this before me, as I am new to PC based recording solutions.

Basically my situation is I want to start a record company (I live in Japan), and one of the services I want to offer is recording as well as record my own stuff. For now I'll just focus on the latter.

I own a laptop computer. IT's a Dell P3 2.0GHZ, 512 MB, 60 GB, with USB 2.0. I'm not sure on the sound card, or to be honest if my computer is USB 2.0 (how do I even check?). I run Windows XP.

I have several software packages. My music of choice is extreme heavy metal, though I do some rap music, and classic rock. I heard from some people that CUBASE is the way to go for computer recording; but I don't know.

So here are my questions:

1. Is it worth it investing in a low budget studio for my laptop computer? Can the signal from the microphone to my hard-drive be of a good enough quality to make it worthwile?

2. What do I need? Principally I need a microphone and some kind of interface with a USB connection? I'm not sure on that either. If that's so, then what should I buy or at least look at (I know microphones but I don't know anything about interfaces)?

3. I'm dirt poor.

I learn fast but I don't really understand how to figure out where to start. I plead ignorance and throw myself at the mercy of those who know better or have tried and succeeded.

Thank you.
Mike

Welcome Genllee to HRC!

You can definately start with the laptop, and if you are careful with purchases be ready to move to a desk top at any time. And yes the first purchase will be a professional grade audio interface. They come in both standard I/O standards USB and Firewire. You may need to pick up a cardbus solution for firewire obviously for that option.

You can start simply by looking in the gear section here at HRC and the clicking on Musiciansfriend link and do a little shoping in the recording / computer / hardware section to get a feel for what is available.

There are also a ton of excelent sound quality software appoications for multitrack recording. Most do a good job with simple recording and playback. Just watch for compatability between your audio interface and software application. In fact most audio interfaces come with either one or a few "light" versions of multitrackers that will get you going. Two interfaces that are going at real good prices at the moment are the USB 428 by Tascam and a little Lexicon unit that looks pretty good. Both available for review at Musiciansfriend. Both of these units also have headphone jacks for monitoring I believe.

You can do a lot with your laptop, just watch the minimum specs on the software packages closely. If you get hooked on recording as many of us have (I started with a laptop as well) you may find it expensive and combersome to upgrade a laptop to configurations necessary to support some more advanced applications. I did. I still use a USB interface but on a desktop that is pretty much packed.

And yes a microphone is necessary although you may find it advantagious to directly plug in instruments with pick-ups. You'll get all that as you read and chat.

Welcome and good luck!
