What is everyone's Favorite Vocal Mic? Which ones are you using. My friend has a Audio Technica with the shock mount {I think the AT4033 Or something like that} and I really liked it but I want to get everyone's opinion and see what you are using.

Shure SM57's are real big around here, but my favourite vocal mic really is my Senheiser or MXL condensor

j.scott, you will probably get a bunch of different opinions. as far as vocal mics go there are a plethora out there. if youre looking for the $100 and under range, i would say the oktava mk319 is popular in this forum. current i use an audio technica 4047s/v running through an art tube mp and i can get a good vintage quality sound out of it almost a little harsher in the mix and dirtier than other mics. i have also used the marshall mxl condensor for a while and it gave me a very clean smooth sound great for project studio recording. ive owned a RODE NTK tube mic for a little while and found that the sound was a little too "round" for me and too clean, i would recommend it for rap or hip hop recording where spicy vocals are needed. as for the sm57, it is a must have for any home recorder but i wouldnt use it on vocals unless i had no other choice. i'm thinking about buying a tube audio technica at4060 mic to try it out or upgrade. but the moral of this rant is, try out different mics and you will find the one that is dearest to you.

What do you mean by "harsher in the mix and dirtier than other mics"?

It that a good thing or bad thing?

Favorite Mic? Definitely a NeumannM147,the sound that it produces is so perfect it's glassy. Not to mention the warmth it has(tube). It's a must if money allows. Up until just recently, I had the luxury of using this mic in a studio I work at. The one I use?I only got one left, an Audio TechnicaATM61HE. -nods- yes. it's that bad.

karma. its a good thing for me. lots of detail less of a round sound that you get from tube mics.

It depends on who the singer is. I really like my Rode NT1000 but for some folks it's too clear. I like the clarity on my voice. It has nice "air". I have a 319 and it's OK but a little too dull sounding for my likings. Some call that sound warm, but to me it is dull. I have a Studio Projects B1, and for the money, $79 new, it is great sounding. If I were recommending a vocal mic for under $100 the SP B1 is it.

The Groove Tubes GT66 sounds real nice... and there's a tube inside! It's a lot cheaper than most tube mics, but still goes for about $500. I bought it because it came with a free pair of M-Audio SP5B Monitors normally $300. What a deal!

In some cases you want the mic to be a little dirty sounding, meaning you don't want it to sound absolutley clear... you want it to sound real. One thing about digital recordings is that it tends to sound sterile until mastering, but a good mic can add a bit of flavor to a vocal track. It's all about what you think sounds good. Some mics I won't use on some people, and some I will. Expiriment with all the mics you got

hey guys ive been saving some money for a while now and i really want to buy a neumann u87ai mic. but i was wondering about the neumann m147 tube mic if that would better suit my needs. I am looking for a professional vocal quality. very breathy and you can hear the smack on their lips or tongue as they sing or talk. just wondering if any of you guys have compared these two mics or have had any inspiring experiences with them.

The fat one always watches us.

sm57- great price, great mic for vocals. 58's for acoustic guitar or right up to the amp.
