Why do I need a mixer when I have a soundcard with preamp?

Howdy yall,

I bought a mixer with 8 outs(2442fxpro)and a soundcard (delta 44) but it didnt make much sense if I wanted to do anything slightly in a live environment. Anyways, the delta came without a cable and I went back to the store and they didnt have any others. So i bought the firewire1814 instead. It has 10 inputs for me, 2 are xlr/ or 1/4. Why do I need a mixer if I can just run it through the soundcard?

Should i just return the mixer and get a decent preamp?

Adios my ham sandwich,

Mainly convienience, for level adjustments, EQ tweaking, effects sends/returns, phantom power for condensor mic's etc.

if your sound card has pres then it's not a case of "need" as much as, as olddog says, convienience. It so much nicer to route signals and such keeping multi signal paths, recording multiple tracks of the same thing at the same time (as many people do) and stuff...plus, in your case you have an effects unit too...
