This would be useful for me too. I want to record guitar and vocals onto a Windows PC using some kind of music software (Cakewalk?). Separate to this, I'm deciding between getting an Edirol PCR80 USB Controller Keyboard or something like a Korg SP200 stage piano. If I can find a stage piano that will suit both USB interface for multiple sounds controlled by the PC AND can be played through an amp on stage with no need for the PC, that would be my preference to avoid the need for 2 keyboards. I'm extremely dumb about this stuff. Can someone keep me right? Thanks.

Jonathan, at your most basic level, to record sax you will need a mic connected to a preamp of some sort (possibly in a mixer) connected to your soundcard. You will also need some software that will record the signal coming through the soundcard. There are a myriad of possibilities in each step I just listed.

Steve, for piano, there are lots of keyboards out there. If you want it to feel like a piano, you will need to look for piano weighted keys. This will be significantly more expensive, but I know most people say they can't really play piano on standard keyboard keys. If you want to play on stage without the keys, you will need either a keyboard that comes with it's own sounds, or a synth to connect the keyboard to. Sounds like you would want a keyboard with it's own sounds and a midi out. You can buy soundcards that have midi in so that you can then plug your keyboard into your computer and play virtual instruments that way.

MIDI won't play a part in recording your sax. It's totally audio, so all you need is a mic (which you said you had) a computer with recording software (which you have) and then some sort of interface to connect those two things together. A small mixer with mic preamps would probably be your best bet. Then you just run your mixer line outs in to your sound card line in. That is about the simplest recording set up there is, and it sounds like that's what you're after.

What's the pros and cons of using a keyboard that will USB interface vs using a stage piano which will interface with a soundcard with a MIDI in? Bear in mind that I have absolutely no MIDI or music software experience!!! Thanks.

The USB interface IS a MIDI interface essentially, it's just another way to send it. I have a Radium49 control/keyboard that hooks into my PC via USB. It still shows up as 16 channels of MIDI in any app I use it in. Same theory, just different cord...plus, with my Radium and many others, the USB cable also supplies the power to the unit, so you don't need to run a power cable to the controller, which is cool.

Steve, I think the main thing to focus on is finding a keyboard that you like (good feel, good sound - assuming you're getting one with onboard sounds). After that, as long as it has midi outs you can make it work. If it happens to connect midi through USB, then that's an added bonus (ease of connectivity), but not necessary. Also, be careful, some months ago I saw a couple keyboards that touted USB, but it didn't send midi via USB (like the Radium 49 db speaks of), it had some other weird functions that were essentially useless in my mind.
