Another NooB setup Q

Hey folks I just found this board and thought I jump on board. A little about what I want to accomplish.
I am by trade a computer guy (Network and Systems Analyst at a University)so while I am always open to learn I got the comp stuff covered. My questions are related to Gear aquisition and performance vs. the evil budget monster. I will list what I have in mind and I need you experts to tell me why I should really stick to computers and leave music alone before I really do some damage...... no, I just really want to avoid novice mistakes because in IT you always look for the "cool guy" gear and while I don't mind spending your money (tax revenue) on "cool guy" stuff I'm a little tighter with my own funds. LOL

I am thinking:
M audio 1010lt
Cakewalk Sonar for my daw.
I've got a line on a Yamaha drum box Not sure of model.
SM57 & 58's
Advise me on a condenser mic
a RNC compressor
adding a mixer later
Good inexpensive near field monitors?

OK let me have it!!
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to HRC.

I love Sonar myself, good choice there. The M-Audio card is a good choice, but stick with the ASIO drivers, I have found typical that their WDM drivers don't perform as well as other WDM drivers.

Be aware there some software drum machines available for use inside Sonar down the road. Battery beign one great one from Native Instrument. 57 and 58's are standard issue, decent stuff.

Overall, good choices, I won't touch the condensor mic issue, I'll leave that to peeps that know better.

Lost for words with all to say.

Yep, ASIO drivers with the great M-Audio 1010lt are your best bet. I used to use WDM not knowing better...get much better latency with ASIO, a whole lot better!

Condensors=other peeps are good at that here besides me

Monitors= I always say, go to a music store if you can and listen to different onces to see what you like. Some like M-Audio, some like JBL, personal taste really. But studio monitors are needed to get that flat sound to judge things correctly.

I'm a network administrator too and I used to work at a community college. Hey, we love to spend the state's money! Just not on salaries at all! Pay the person cheap and spend $750,000 easily just on servers in one year! w00t! Then again, not so w00t. :)

i would tell you blue berry or blue bird, but very wel expensive, they got for like $999, so something cheaper but good...

If you wanna go real cheap, MXL 990. I use it and with the right stuff u can make it sound like a diffrent mic..or look at MXL 992

Check out the shure ksm27,KSM32,Ksm44, awesome mic. I tried them all out and there nice..but u will need a pre-amp for these mics. OFten offered in other equipment (Mixers,Audio Interface, etc)

one thing I see you missing is a preamp for your mics. Your mixer that you want to get later would probably serve this purpose, but, until then you'd have trouble really recording with your mics. As for condensors, I use a Neumann, and love it, but don't really have any advice on anything more economical. Some seem to like the Rhodes NT series and Behringer B series.

Thanks dB and vdale I hope that while I mine for knowledge from you all I can at least help with some of the more obscure PC stuff but even if I'm no help at all I'm still gonna learn from you. *G*
Vdale- NO KIDDING!!! they don't wanna pay me sunflower seeds (peanuts would be a raise) the problem is the job is soooo great and they let me take on side work to supplement.
RobertJ- WOW the Blues are really expensive (note the above peanuts) I'm not so worried with "cheap" but I am concerned with 'Value" if I have to pay a little more to get something that will work well and truly justify the cost I'll go there but $1000 for a Mic will cost me half of everything I own as I don't think my wife will see the humor in a Mic that cost more than a couple of hundred. I'll check out the Shures thank you for the input I really know nothing about condensers.

Coolo- From the research I have done the 1010lt has 2 mic preamps on it. While I an relativley shure these won't power a condenser as they don't have phantom power they should suffice with an sm58 shouldn't they?

PJK- Thanks I'll give them a look they appear to be in the right budget arena.

Thanks folks for all of the input keep it coming I need all the help I can get.

longshot, I didn't realize that the 1010lt had mic pres included in it. If so, you sound like you got it exactly right. SM58 should be no problemo.
