Panning Vocals / Mono-Stereo Question

If I record my vocals, then multitrack it and pan one copy hard right and one hard left, does that leave my with a stereo signal or a mono signal? Because it seems to be stereo in the sense that there are two sources, yet at the same time it seems to be mono because it gives the overall effect of being centered and equal in both speakers.

On the other hand, if I pan a mono signal 60 percent right, it seems like it’s stereo because it’s different in both speakers.

So my question I think is this…

Is a track considered mono or stereo based on whether or not it’s centered, or based on whether it has one or two sources?

Also, is hard panning the vox that way a good idea?

what you are talking about is simply panning. or changing where the voice seems to come from for the listeners perspective. so it's doesn't sound like the speakers are different, just that the voice is coming from a place other than the center.

so copying the vocal into 2 tracks and panning them is just the same as panning one track, UNTIL....

once you change the EQ, or add effects, or in any way modify the one track and not the other, it becomes stereo.

just think about it this way. if there are two different tracks, one for left and one for right, then it is stereo. it's as simple as that. so if you make two of the same vocal track, but one plays left and one plays right, it IS stereo, but will not sound any different than mono.

and i have never heard of anyone recording vx in stereo. but hey, have fun with it, maybe you'll find something you like :)

I listened to Alison Krauss and James Taylor singing a duet. Her voice is around 45 degree left of center, while his is around 30 degree right of center. It is a very nice effect, which could only be done with stereo.

ah but the vx tracks for the singers are still recorded in mono.... the individual vx tracks are simply panned left and right for that effect.

and holy crap i love james taylor and allison krauss singing together.
