Stereo drum samples...............

Hey, guys
I found some fairly real sounding drum samples that I wanna try to use. They're in stereo, though. I know I can convert them to mono, but I was wondering if there's any advantages/disadvantages to using stereo drum samples. They sound OK to me, but does it make sense to use stereo samples, then make them part of a stereo mix? Like panning a stereo sample of a cymbal 40% to the left. Does anyone do this? Thanx.

it's entirely up to taste. personally i feel a stereo sample gives a fullness and depth and sense of being right there with the drummer that's hard to get from mono samples. you can still pan them around within the stereo field, but each channel gets a slightly different sound. i myself prefer stereo.

just a note: try to avoid stereo kick drums. for some reason, i guess because of phase differences, bassy hits sound bad at high volumes. Or maybe you'll have better luck then me. I guess you won't know until you try it.

but really, if propery recorded and processed, stereo samples will be equal in both channels when played back normally, so then you can still shift them around in the pan image at mix down. i feel the only drawback to stereo samples is that they are double the filesize! :O) -j

Personally, I prefer mono drums samples and then pan then as I make the drum track in FruityLoops. But yes, either way it gets done, drums panned around is something I do all the time, but no drums gets panned hard left or right, just subtle panning.

thanks for the input. I think they sound pretty cool, but I was wondering if they would end up cluttering the mix in the end. I'll experiment and see what happens. Thanks again.

OK..........After much searching and scouring, wading thru tons of $200 CD's, I found what I think is the best sounding FREE drumkit there is. Go here www.nskit.com/ and check it out. Good sounding kit, and lots of velocity layers! Just what I was looking for in the first place. You can get these in WAV, sf2, gig, and seer format, and the guy doesn't charge a nickel !! There's a help forum, tutorials on how to build sf2's from the wav's, and lots of other stuff. This is a real find in my opinion. Check it out !!
