Emu 1820m and Cubase SX (v1.05) AAARRGHHHH!! What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to record music using an Emu 1820m and Cubase SX v1.05. I open Patchmix DSP, I open Cubase. I try to record something, usually guitar, and sometimes I can SEE the signal in Patchmix but hear nothing. Sometimes I hear the signal but Cubase doesn't. Sometimes Cubase hears it but I don't. Sometimes all anyone hears is me screaming at the screen - what the hell am I doing wrong. It's probably something really simple, but when it comes to talking about ASIO or VST I'm perhaps not the sharpest tool in the box and my eyes glaze over as I drift into a fantasy world where recording my music is as quick and easy as they said it would be in the adverts!!! If anyone knows about either of these products, or even better both of them, PLEASE help me out.

Grumpy, I am not a big Cubase user but if you wait a little bit till after the thanksgiving feasting I am guessing Walt who is the residant Cubase SX guru and user here will see the post and maybe get ya headed in the right direction.

The fact that is doing odd things without you tweaking things about would lead me to believe something is amiss in the install of either the 1820's drivers or the Cubase install itself. But I would maybe check with the E-MU site and make sure you have the latest drivers for the unit and try that.

I have nothing in the way of help to offer, other than to say that I feel your pain! I also have an EMU card (0404) and that doggone Patchmix software is very confusing. At the moment, I can get only one track to record at any given time, but I'm working on it.

I'm affraid that I'm challanged as well when it comes to E-Mu. Sounds a little like a wierd grazing animal. I can help in a tangential fashion. VST is the prefered interface for plug-ins in Cubase, as apposed to say direct-X. ASIO is the prefered soundcard interface for Cubase. Definately use the latest ASIO drivers available from E-MU. Relitive to how the software Patchmix works to interface the soundcard to Cubase, I have no idea. Never played with an E-Mu. You might check Pinnacle Studio's Stienberg website and see if they have anything in support. I havn't looked since Pinnicle Systems purchased Stienberg but they used to have a section on all tested soundcards. There was a lot of good inforamtion on how each soundcard interfaced with Cubase. Beyond that I don't think I can help much. Another little tangent is that I have never had any luck with Stienberg support. They have always been either slow, vague, or non-respondant. So I guess if I where to email anybody it would be E-mu.
