Help with recording with the line in on my computer

I have acid pro 4.0 installed on my computer and am going out from a mackie mixer with rca's into an 1/8 inch mic jack in computer. I heard that its better to plug into the line in jack instead of mic. I did this but i cant get it to read a signal. Does anyone know what to do?
Thanks

Hey...Welcome to HRC!

What kind of sound card do you have? I'll assume that it's a Sound Blaster, or maybe even an onboard sonud card.

Either way, you need to double-click on the little speaker icon on your tray (near the clock) and make sure that your line in isn't muted. This happened to me years ago, and it took me forever to realize the problem. If that's not the problem, make sure you double-check the obvious: cord is good, patched into correct jack on mixer, etc.

You are correct in your assertion to NEVER use the microphone jack on your sound card.

Good luck!

Hey Jim thanks my line in was muted but its still not reading the signal so idk what it is. Right now just to test it out im just hooking a cassette deck to the computer w/ the rca/1/8 cord and it read fine through the mic jack now in the line in with it unmuted its still not working. Well idk I guess ill just keep messing with it if theres anything else be glad to here it. Thanks again!
