Songs for the "Save The Music" Project

Posted on

Administrator Since: Apr 03, 2002

OK, submit the songs you will put up for it, or the songs you wish to nominate.

I can really only toss up "The Right Way" and "Now" of mine, as I feel they are the most positive-looking lyrics and such...sorta...but if neither are needed/wanted thats fine too. My personal choice would be "The Right Way" as it's my favorite of my own (which sounds wierd saying). Both of mine and others are at music.dbmasters.net for anyone to listen to.

I will also do the finalizing of it regarding consistent listening level throughout and such "mastering" type duties while treading as little aspossible on the "sound" of any given song unless requested by the artist.

Others?

What is the time frame for submission? I have a song in mind but I doubt I can meet deadline.

Walt, I was hoping to have the song list done and hopefully the CD ready by Christmas.

As I mentioned in the sibling thread to this one, I'm working up a song called "Give it Back" that I think would fit nicely. I will have it done to meet any timeframe established. (Hopefully by the end of this weekend!) I think CD in hand by Christmas is very aggresive, but also very realistic, and very appropriate.

Hi, pretty new round here, but i'd like to put something forward if that's okay, are you still taking submissions, and if so, when do you need it by?

Well, it would need to be accessible for us to listen to, what I am trying to do in this thread is get links to songs that are being nominated by the members or submitted by the authors. That said, I would say as a precautionary note, while we very much welcome anyone to contribute, we can only have a max of about 14-15 songs (depending on length) to fill the CD. And having a few different styles would be cool and help market to more people. Though it may make getting a good running order more difficult.

I will add a link to mine in my first post. Most here have heard my music, I goes many of the newer people haven't heard what us regulars have come to know :-)

I'm working on something at the moment that i may well ahve completed by the end of the day, if so i'll post a link to an MP3. Do i post it here for consideration for the compilation or mail it to someone? In case i don't have it finished today when's the closing date?

I dunno, depends how fast this process goes, I am hoping to nail down the song list quickly. Hopefully I can download a lot of the wav files (after we all decide via mp3) which to use.

Post your mp3 link here, if we decide to use it, we will need to get the wav file somehow, hopefully via download, I am broadband and Noize has a hella-fast hookup, better than T1, so between us we can download well, I dunno how fast peeps can upload...

Now thats the process, now lets keep posting to mp3 links or nominations.

I'd like to offer up a song of mine "Missus C". It's a kind of an "alt-country meets the Small Faces" acoustic and electric number that's pretty light-hearted.

I have a rough recording of it on my nowhereradio page (link in my profile), under the album "The Road From Home to Here". I would plan on re-recording it for better quality, but that wouldn't take more than a weekend of dedicated work, I don't think.

the only potential trouble is that it's over 5 minutes long (5 1/2, I think), which may be a bit long for an album format such as this. I'm not so sure that I could willingly trim it to a more LP-friendly 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 minutes without neutering it. If we have the space, then I'd be more than willing to offer its usage for this project, if you so choose.

P.S. I'd like to suggest the use of a lossless compression type such as FLAC or Shorten for file x-fer. there are converters out there to convert b/n these formats and .wav. These formats just take a bit of the bulk out of .wav files for easier transmission across the net.

Nominations that come to mind:
"Let It Go" by Coco
"Inspiration" by Coolo
"Car Mojo" by TinCanBug
...all pretty positive songs IMO

The thing is, a lot of people here that I'd nominate have EPs that they're probably trying to market, so I'm not sure how receptive they'd be.

For instance, I'd sure love to hear some stuff from Jues, Collapse and J.SCOTT on this compilation because they always impress me when I hear their stuff. But, they may be hard to get a hold of since they don't seem to frequent these boards much any more.

Submitted for your approval...

My humble song, freshly written and recorded, is called "On and On It Goes". It's stripped down, just me and my guitar. This is a preliminary mix...would need some tweaking.

Thanks!

Do we have a deadline for submissions etc and final decisions?? If I have time, I'll track my ideal song for this. If not, Im happy too use one of my exisitng songs except Wasted Land which does not suit I dont think - in fact, I KNOW it doesnt suit if yer looking at positives!!

As I say - I have the idea song in the pipeline.

Will try to track it asap and get it online as soon as.

I'll be back at yis later with it.

As I have already said about 3 times, I want to have thsi done by christmas, but it's already looking unlikely, I was expecting a much higher percentage of actual song submissions and votes over just idle chatter...I didn't start these threads for chatter, they are here for business...

Maybe we need to set a deadline(?) Those usually motivate people. How much turnaround time do you need from submission deadline to CDs in hand?

Let's work backward from Christmas. If we want the CDs by the week of Dec. 20th, then when do you need to submit the master for duplication? How much time do you require for mastering the CD? Given that information, we can just set a date and that'll have to be that.

I spent a good hour listening to members' music last night. There's a lot of great stuff! Let's get this together and Git-R-Dun.

I replied in the other forum but lets set a date. I propose 01/12/04 for all songs to be submitted.

Hows that??

Nae messin aroond. Any of my songs are up. If I had to pick a song from a list it would be easier but from what I know, Tincans "Car Mojo" is cool. Olddogs songs are ALL cool tho "Are you gonna be around" is my fave. Geetar Jim's "Nobodys Girl" is good. Any of mine are up tho if I have to submit, I proffer either "Let It Go" or "The Words". So thats:

Olddog - Are You Gonna Ba Around
Jim - Nobodys Girl
Tincan - Car Mojo
For Me I proffer - Let It Go or The Words

Cheers

Well I'd second coco's list of Jim, Tincan and coco himself, my favorite being Let It Go.

If you want one of mine, that's cool too, but your gonna have to master it so it sounds decent :)

I'll refresh my memory on everybody's songs here and see if I can come up with additional nominations.

I still feel ya gotta have product in hand though for this to be successful, to that end I'd be willing to prepay for the ones I think I can sell here.

Here is a list of the people who have responded to this thread saying that they are willing to contribute. So far...

dB - "The Right Way"
Walt - ???
Guitar Jim - "On and On It Goes"
Rigsby - ???
Tadpui - "Missus C"
Dansaltdog - Drums/percussion thing
Presly 07 -???
TonyD - "Black Water"
Coco - "Without You" or "Let It Go"
OldDog - ???
TopMan - "Holding On"
Cougar - "Night On The Town"

I haven't actually listened to all of the songs, but I assume that they are all worthy or they wouldn't have been put forward.

Some folks need to finalize their committment, in terms of what song they'd like to contribute, or if they truly want to contribute at all.

I think that we can do this!

I have one I can put up. It is a remix of a jazz piece done by the big band. It is the only song I have that I can get origional copyrights to. I'll get it in for review tomorrow. I have a rock piece comming up, but I am not sure how long it will take to get the vocals down. It also is an origional. The singer is a little bizzare, hard to say when he will get it down.

Walt, Blank Shot get my vote for sure.

I am hoping to try and rip a blues tune out for this with the lyrics Boys Mum wrote and get it submitted in time. Otherwise I might just pick another original that is allready finished.

So far I am liking the list of tunes up.

Rigsby, that is awsome. What a soundscape you created, definately my cup of tea. Some differant choices of instrumentation there as well.

Ya Noise, You really need to be represented in this gig. It would be an honor and pleasure to share disk space!

I guess I havn't written too much yet, but I really like this concept. Indy musicians supporting music education. It really says something about the whole artform. If at all succesfull it would be great to extend the benifits to our friends and neighbors across the ponds with future endevors. I love the fact that the foundation we are targeting benifits many not few, now if it just spanned geo-political boundries, that would be prestine!

I'm already across the pond (London, England), so i guess that's one hand extended at least. I'm really hoping mine gets selected, but either way i'll do what i can to make sure people know about this compilation. When do we hear what gets on? ...Oh, and how do i get to be a pro HRC user by the way and exactly what does that mean?

Noise, thanks a lot, very kind, i'll be checking out your stuff and some other things from around here over the next few days, soon as i go somewhere with a faster connection.

Click on any HRC Pro logo and you'll find out all the details. It's the "for pay" services of HRC...though a lot of people seem to subscribe just to help support HRC and not even really use all the features :-)

Anyway, getting people to know about the disk isn't the hard part, it's getting the physical disks into peoples hands. Noize and I were talking this morning and he mentioned maybe passing it thru CD Baby...I dunno, I just dunno how to handle it.

Regarding whats on it, well, I am hoping the members work that out among themselves, cuz I am buried in some other stuff at the moment...only 24 hours in most days...

Holy crap, I'm a bit late on this one. I think it would be cool to add Joint Rezonate- the collab between Coolo, El Musico and me. It can be found in my profile under music, also in members' music/instrumentals.

Everything else looks good although I haven't heard quite all of it yet.

Cheers Coco,

I just wish it was a little more 'finished' sounding. Could use bass or something to fill out the low end a little better. The ending is also a little sloppy.

Anyhow, I'm really glad you like it Coco. It makes me feel much better about it. I get very self-critical sometimes and I almost didn't post it
because I was cringing on every little mistake I heard. Compliment appreciated greatly!

Thanks,
Mike

Nae worries Mike...all comments most deserved.

I particularly like that song and I wouldnt change much. You could add some bass tho, see how it sounds but it sounds good as is to me.

In fact, Im sure I played it a good few times when you had it in the virtual studio and couldnt come up with anything to fit - it seemed good as it was.

So - never doubt yer abilities - as guitarists (aye , I am one tae) we are always finding nit picky faults but alas, mostly nobody else ever hears em!! So...its cool.

In fact, I'll maybe hit ya up for some similar soundin geetar on an instrumental I am planning soon.

(response from another post that I didn't want to bump)
Mike, I'm definitely down to use joint rezonate for the compilation. The reason I hadn't submitted anything for the compilation was I didn't think I had any material that "fit" the project. This track slipped my mind I guess, even though I'm pretty much in love with it and still play it often. Though it would be cool if we could get a little more polished mix. I can furnish the individual drum tracks but I wonder if you and El Musico still have your guitar tracks?

All right, you convinced me. Best to let it be ;-)

I'd be thrilled to play on one of your tunes dude. I think you have tremendous compositional skills. Just give me a holler when your ready.

I kinda think we're nitpicky for a reason. Something's got to keep us motivated to get better!

dB- I haven't been around lately so I didn't know about this whole project, but I read all about it and I would love to contribute a song if it's not too late!

Either our song "Waiting for Words to Come" or "Questioning Sincerity" off of NowhereRadio would be cool. You can pick whichever one you prefer- or both if you'd like to.

They're at www.nowhereradio.com/unitedcreation under singles. If you want to use one of them then I could send you the wave file or a higher quality MP3. If you need to credit someone, just say it's by "United Creation."

Let's leave the vote up to dB or the mods, they can just pick 'em and save us all some time. Votes, shmotes. There ain't no such thing as a cyberdemocracy... :) it moves too slow

Heck, dB, you can just send each pick an email letting them know they're "it". In the email, briefly describe the compilation, mention that all profits go to charity, and say "if you consent to HRC using your song for the above-stated purpose, respond with the reply "APPROVED" and upload your files to ............ " you get my point. Print those emails out and archive them as contracts. You want this out by Xmas, make your calls soon. Waiting for input would be fair and balanced but a bit ssllloooowwwww.........

I for one am just grateful to be nominated. Very few people outside HRC ever actually hear my stuff, so you guys are the bomb, regardless.

Ok. I have an idea that might speed up the selection process. Each of us suggests... oh, I dunno, say no more than 6 different songs from the list of songs mentioned so far in this discussion. And everybody shake hands, thump each other on the back, and say no hard feelin's if your own choices or songs don't get picked, alright? Let's just give it 10 days, and everybody who votes, gets counted. In the end we add up the votes, and there you have it. The next phase.

Are ya fer it or are ya agin' it?

Added to the list Rigsby. I just went thru the *65* posts looking for what was submitted so far, the miss wasn't intentional. :)

If each contributor could state the length of each of the titles currently "on the table", that would probably help. It would make it easier to tell if we have too much music to fit on a cd.

sorry, i been really busy and on the road... (traveling for work) but i figured folks would listen to them first- i only offer my song, if it doesnt make the cut of standards so be it. Im sorta a weak link around here, (and i know it) dont include mine if theres better stuff.
Give one guy here the go ahead, to listen to all the things presented- and make the final call... noise, flame, coolo, tinca, ect . I would, but my job has gone nuts and my focus is there. i do want to say that just because ive been around a while doesnt mean one of my songs deserves to be up there. i really do have a complex about my music compared to what you guys do. so... someone call themselves the "Decider" listen to all the songs submitted and provide feedback on each one. the rest of us can chime in and make a decision in a few days....

Hi guys,
I was just reading this thread and just wanted to let you know that the CD's we use are 80 minutes. Maybe that would allow for a few more songs.
Thanks,
Jason

I don't think we should go much over fourty minutes personally, that's a pretty good amount of listening time. Piling it up with tons of songs rarely does anything any favours IMO.

DB, did you offer to sequence the disc, if not, i'd be happy to do that, at least is as much as getting a running order that you can then compile. Let me know.

Does anyone feel that we should have contributing artists sign (or post a statement of agreement in this forum, since IP addresses are logged) a legalese type of document to serve as a mechanical and/or distribution license? One that briefly sums up the intended purpose of the complilation, stating that all profits go to charity?

Good call. Also stating that all copyrights are maintained by the artist.

Sorry I've been ignoring this thread for a while now. My current take of my suggested song is in no shape for being on a CD, and I didn't think that I could redo it before Xmas. Since we're no longer trying to get this out before xmas, my first project after the holiday is to retrack Missus C and make it more presentable. I'm doubly enthused about doing this because I'd like to submit this track to Deeps' radio show also.

If it is still in consideration, the length is 5:10, and a URL will be available in about 1 week.

Ok, does anyone have a legal document template for summing up and agreeing to distribution/mechanical rights? We need someone to do a little legwork, locate a similar statement on the net, and post it in this forum. Or just write something out. Who's willing?

Tadpui, I was just listening to that song tonight, randomly, and was thinking there were a couple of things I noticed. Main thing was that some of the panning was real extreme and made it sound unbalanced in my headphones. Maybe something to consider as you touch this one up. It is a really cool song though. So I fully support you spruceing it up!!

I would likely do the graphics myself and submit for approval of the artists that contribute. Very simple needs for this situation.

Hey Walt, Blank Shot is fantastic! Can't get it out of my head. I'm working on a jazz feel song right now, and (coming from a folk, rock, pop background) I'm having a hell of a time getting the righ feel. Just me, and a bunch of guitars, basses, keyboard, so I don't have a big band, but any tips for getting the right "feel" on a jazzy piece? I know I'm being vague about it, but it's hard to describe. Think torch singer over a theme to a sixties sit-com......

Thank you TallChap!

That is a 'swung' jazz piece. The only thing I can think of that maybe you are not used to playing folk, pop, and rock would be the 'swing' feeling to the piece. And man it is difficult to explain in words. I can only recomend listening to old swing pieces. Goodman, Ellington, Basie, Shaw, Miller, Brown, Krupa, Fitzgerold, Hampton (although a lot of his stuff is like a technical exersize) are a few.

Ya gotta think in two instead of four, although most are written in four. Beats 2 & 4 are the timekeepers instead of 1 & 3 like in most rock. I often set a metronone to half speed of the piece and play with the met marking 2 & 4. It was a little challange at first especially not having the first beat of the song marked out. Once I got going it was really cool. The next thing is to think in terms of triplets or three on one. Now here is the part that is really rough to explain. Instead of the triplet feel being ba ba ba....ba ba ba or streight it's more like ba daa ba... ba daa ba. I know that is a shabby explanation but hey us artests are wierd anyway.

It's really funny you bring it up. We carry around 500 charts of which maybe 50 or so are rock, pop, CW, and the guys have a terrible time with it. Can't play a streight eighth note for their lives. I try to do some work as a 'studio' musician for groups here at the house to keep up on my 'rock' chops just because of that.

The biggest hint is just listening I think. And mark tempo by tapping foot or whatever on 2 and 4.

Fly me to the moon......ba da do da do da da do t da ... do da

Ho boy, hope too many folks don't read this one.

I think that's exactly it, Walt. 2&4.
Geesh, that easy! The drum pattern I've written doesn't swing at all, so the feel of the acoustic guitar slightly swinging over it is great. You're absolutely right. Folk, rock, pop, don't really swing. There might be some pushed beats, but no real swinging. I thing if I play a more rolling bass line over the guitars, it will give a great jazzy feel.

My fave big band stuff is Stan Kenton (basically the heavy metal of it's day - with brass..), so in my mind it wasn't equating to the jazz element there. When you said, "Fly Me To The Moon" it clicked immediately.

Now I have to put the vocals down...Argh! I'll have "Fly Me To The Moon" in my head.
