Alesis SR16 volume

I'm just getting into home recording and bought a used Alesis SR16. Everything seems to work great except that when I tried the touch pads, they are very faint unless I beat the crap out of them. I know they are touch sensitive and this feature seems to work, but even so, the sound is still not as loud as the presets (and I am pounding on the pads as hard as I can). The volume is up all of the way, also.

Surely this is not normal, right?

Well beating on anything as hard as one can is always questionable when cast against normal.

I did just read an excerpt from a Tascam manual today about touch pads. It was rambling about not using pencils or foreign objects because the touch pad need heat or moisture or something inherent to skin to sense the presence.

I really don't know, maybe soak your hands or bake them a little and try again. I don't know what the pads are trying to sense.

Sorry. Go to www.alesis.com and shoot them an email at tech support. Those guys are great! Just had to do a little repair to my HD24 and the supervisor out there a Robert Ray was just fabulous at helping me out.

My Zoom does this when I switch to the sensitive mode rather than constant "Beat the hell of the drums and its always the same volume" mode!!

Basically, if its anything like mine its not possible to to a "build up" using sensitivity as its either too loud or too quiet.

I suggest switchin the feature off and just using a constant volume (dunno where that is on your machine tho - check the manual).

Cheers

Yep, the onboard pads of such device's do not really allow for much naunce in the way of velocity sensativity. They have a pretty narrow band really. I would suggest you record as coco said at full throttle then go in to your editor software and edit the velocity there.

I have an SR16, and I set the volume to be static at I think 8. Its in the record setup mode. I think it goes soft, medium, loud (these are the touch sensitive settings and you are selecting the max output), then it continues with 1 through 8, 8 being the max (these are static volume settings - again max output). If you want dymnamics for a certain pattern I just change the record setting while "recording" that pattern and mess with it forever to get it right. Then set the volume back to 8 for the rest of the patterns. The volumes are only in effect while creating a pattern and not during play back. Hope it helps - enjoy...
